The gurgling, bubbling, or "water running" sound you are hearing in your BLACK+DECKER BCRK25V is the result of the refrigerant (cooling agent) transitioning between liquid and gas states as it circulates through the evaporator and condenser coils. In a compact 2.5 cu ft unit, the tubing is positioned closer to the interior walls, making the acoustic profile of the refrigerant flow much more audible than in a full-sized refrigerator. Specifically, this occurs when the compressor pushes the liquid refrigerant through the expansion valve into the evaporator. As the pressure drops, the refrigerant boils and evaporates, absorbing heat from the fridge interior. This phase change creates the bubbling sound. You will notice this most prominently immediately after the compressor kicks on or shortly after the cooling cycle finishes and the system equalizes pressure. To confirm this is normal operation and not a leak, check the interior temperature. If the fridge is maintaining a steady temperature (typically between 35°F and 45°F) and there is no pooled liquid on the floor beneath the unit, the sound is simply the mechanical process of heat exchange. If the sound is accompanied by a total loss of cooling, only then should you suspect a refrigerant leak.
How to Fix It
Since this is a standard operational characteristic of the BCRK25V cooling system, there is no mechanical "repair" required. However, you can minimize the perceived volume of these sounds by optimizing the environment and stability of the unit.
- Level the Unit: Ensure the refrigerator is perfectly level. Use a bubble level on top of the unit. If it is tilted, the refrigerant may flow unevenly, causing louder "sloshing" sounds. Adjust the leveling legs at the bottom front of the unit by rotating them clockwise or counter-clockwise until the unit is stable.
- Clear the Airflow: Ensure there is at least 2.5 inches of clearance between the back of the fridge and the wall, and 2 inches on the sides. If the condenser coils on the back are pressed against a wall, the compressor has to work harder and longer, making the gurgling cycles more frequent and loud.
- Optimize Loading: Avoid placing items directly against the back interior wall. This prevents "cold spots" and reduces the frequency with which the thermostat triggers the compressor, thereby reducing the number of times you hear the bubbling sound.
- Temperature Calibration: Set the dial to a medium setting. Setting the fridge to the coldest possible setting forces the compressor to run nearly continuously, which keeps the refrigerant in a constant state of turbulent flow, increasing the noise level.
If That Didn't Work
If the noise has transitioned from a gentle bubble to a loud knocking, rattling, or a constant high-pitched hiss, try these alternatives:
- Check for Vibration: If the gurgling is accompanied by a rattle, the compressor mounting bushings may have shifted. Gently push the unit back or side-to-side while it is running; if the noise stops, place a vibration-dampening rubber mat under the four corners of the fridge to decouple it from the floor.
- Inspect the Drain Pan: Locate the evaporation pan at the bottom rear. If the pan is overflowing or shifted, the vibration of the compressor can cause the water in the pan to slosh, mimicking a gurgling sound. Ensure the pan is seated firmly in its brackets.
- Defrost the Unit: If you see ice buildup on the interior back wall, the refrigerant flow can become restricted, leading to louder, more erratic bubbling. Unplug the unit, open the door, and let it defrost completely for 24 hours to clear any internal blockages in the evaporator.
- Verify Door Seal: Inspect the magnetic gasket around the door. If the seal is leaking, warm air enters constantly, forcing the refrigerant to cycle rapidly and loudly. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water to ensure a tight, airtight seal.

- Avoid Overfilling: Do not pack the BCRK25V to 100% capacity. Air must circulate freely to prevent the compressor from overworking, which reduces noise and extends the life of the motor.
- Dust the Coils: Every six months, use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean the dust off the rear condenser coils. Dust buildup increases heat, making the cooling cycle louder and less efficient.
- Wait Before Restarting: If you unplug the unit or move it, wait at least 4 hours before plugging it back in. This allows the refrigerant oil to settle; plugging it in too early can cause a loud "clunking" sound or permanent compressor failure.
