Unlike the removable filter basket, these internal components are not exposed to air or manual scrubbing, allowing organic residues to oxidize and "bake" onto the heating walls. When hot water passes through these contaminated areas, it picks up these rancid oils, imparting a charred taste to your coffee regardless of bean freshness. You can confirm this is an internal buildup issue if the bitterness persists after scrubbing the permanent filter and carafe, or if you notice a slower-than-normal water flow during the brew cycle. If you see white, flaky deposits in the water reservoir or on the showerhead, you are dealing with a combined case of scale buildup and oil residue, which restricts water flow and causes the machine to overheat the water, further scorching the coffee grounds.
How to Fix It
To fully sanitize the internal plumbing and remove burnt residues, you must perform a deep descaling and cleaning cycle. For the best results, use a dedicated citric-acid-based descaler like Urnex Dezcal or a 50/50 mixture of distilled white vinegar and filtered water.
- Empty the water reservoir completely and remove any remaining coffee grounds from the brew basket.
- Fill the water reservoir to the "MAX" fill line with your chosen cleaning solution (either the diluted descaling powder or the vinegar mix).
- Ensure the brew basket is empty and the carafe (or a large mug) is positioned securely on the drip tray to catch the discharge.
- Press the BREW ZONE button to toggle between the pod and carafe settings, ensuring you are in the carafe mode for maximum flow.
- Navigate the menu by pressing the SETTINGS button until the CLEAN option is highlighted on the display.
- Press the START/STOP button to initiate the Clean Cycle. The machine will pulse the water through the system in intervals; this is intentional to allow the cleaning agent to soak into the internal scale.
- Once the cycle completes, discard the cleaning solution from the carafe.
- Fill the reservoir to the MAX line with fresh, cold, filtered water.
- Run the CLEAN cycle again, or simply run two full "Large" carafe brews with plain water to flush out any remaining acidic residue or vinegar scent.
If That Didn't Work
- Showerhead Deep Clean: The "showerhead" (the perforated plate where water exits the machine) often traps grounds and oils. Use a damp microfiber cloth or a soft toothbrush with a drop of dish soap to scrub the underside of the brew head. Be careful not to push debris further into the machine.

- Vinegar Soak: For extreme bitterness, fill the reservoir with white vinegar and let it sit for 60 minutes before starting the Clean Cycle. This allows the acid to break down stubborn carbonized oils that a standard cycle might miss.

- Filter Maintenance: Always rinse your permanent gold-tone filter with hot water after every use to remove oils before they have a chance to harden.
