The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is equipped with a sophisticated thermal protection circuit designed to prevent the brushless motor from burning out. When the vacuum shuts off after a few seconds of operation—often referred to as "pulsing"—it is almost always because the motor is working too hard to pull air through a restriction. This creates a vacuum lock, causing the motor temperature to spike instantly, triggering a thermal cutoff to protect the internal circuitry.
The blinking blue light on the charger is the diagnostic confirmation of a "Fault State." While a solid blue light indicates charging, a rhythmic blink after a sudden shutdown indicates that the Battery Management System (BMS) has flagged a critical error, most commonly an overheat event or a total airflow blockage. You can confirm this by checking the LCD screen on the V12; if you see a "Filter" or "Airway Blocked" icon immediately before the shutdown, the issue is mechanical restriction rather than a battery cell failure.
How to Fix It
To resolve the thermal cutoff and reset the BMS, follow these precise steps to clear the airflow path and reset the sensors:
- Power down the unit and remove the wand and the cleaner head (Fluffy Optic or Motorbar) to isolate the main body.
- Locate the filter assembly at the rear of the cyclone. Rotate the filter counter-clockwise to unlock it and pull it straight out of the housing.
- Inspect the filter pleats. If you see a grey layer of fine dust, wash the filter under a cold tap. Run water through the pleated section until the runoff is completely clear.
- Gently squeeze the filter to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist the filter, as this can tear the HEPA material and permanently reduce suction.
- Place the filter in a well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours. If the filter is even slightly damp, the motor will suck moisture into the electronics, which can permanently fry the motherboard.
- While the filter dries, inspect the "inlet" (where the wand connects to the body). Use a flashlight to check for clumps of hair or debris lodged in the neck. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull out any obstructions.
- Reinsert the bone-dry filter, locking it firmly into place, and reattach the cleaner head.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for a "Hidden" Blockage in the Wand: Drop a coin or a small marble through the wand tube. If it doesn't fall through instantly, there is a clog. Use a broom handle or a flexible plumbing snake to push the blockage out from the top down.
- Clear the Cleaner Head Brush Bar: Remove the brush bar from the cleaner head by pressing the release button. If hair is wrapped tightly around the axle, it creates friction that triggers the motor's overload protection. Use a seam ripper or scissors to cut away the hair.
- Perform a Hard Battery Reset: If the blue light continues to blink even after cleaning, the BMS may be stuck in a fault loop. Remove the battery (if your model has the screw-in version) or hold the power trigger for 10 full seconds while the unit is unplugged from the charger to discharge residual capacitance.
- Inspect the Bin Seal: Check the rubber gasket where the bin closes. If the seal is pinched or torn, the vacuum will leak air, causing the motor to run at higher RPMs to compensate, which leads to overheating. Replace the gasket if it is perished.
Heads Up
- Never use a hairdryer or oven to speed up the filter drying process; excessive heat will warp the plastic frame and ruin the HEPA seal.
- Avoid using "Boost" mode for extended periods on thick carpets, as this maximizes heat generation and increases the likelihood of a thermal shutdown.
- Wash your filter once every month to prevent fine particulate buildup that the "shake-out" method cannot remove.
- Ensure the charger is plugged into a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or extension lead to ensure the BMS receives a consistent voltage during the reset process.
