Diagnosis
This issue typically stems from a disconnect between the physical sensor state and the software logic governing the ecobee SmartThermostat Premium. The "Pause when Open" functionality is not a native, free feature of the eco+ energy savings suite; rather, it is a premium integration tied specifically to the Haven Smart Security subscription. If you are not an active subscriber, the system will detect the door is open (reporting it in the app), but it will not trigger the HVAC relay to cut power to the AC compressor. Furthermore, this failure can be caused by a "zombie" sensor state where the sensor reports "Open" to the app, but the thermostat hasn't received the trigger packet due to a Zigbee signal interference or a range issue. Because the SmartThermostat Premium acts as the hub, any physical obstruction or distance exceeding 60 feet (or passing through heavy masonry/metal) can cause the "Pause" command to lag or fail entirely, even if the sensor appears connected. You can confirm this by checking the "Sensor" tab in your app; if the status changes to "Open" but the thermostat continues to show "Cooling" on the main screen, the issue is either subscription-based or a communication timeout.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to ensure the integration is active and configured correctly:
- Open the ecobee app and navigate to the Main Menu. Select eco+ from the list.
- Scroll down to the Pause when Open section. If the toggle is grayed out or displays a lock icon, you must navigate to the account settings and verify your Haven Smart Security subscription is active and linked to your primary email.
- Once the subscription is verified, toggle Pause when Open to "On."
- Select the specific sensor associated with your patio door. Ensure the "Door/Window" type is correctly assigned and not accidentally set as a "Room Sensor" (which only tracks temperature/occupancy).
- Set the Pause Duration. I recommend setting this to 15 or 30 minutes. If it is set too short, the AC may kick back on before you've actually closed the door, making it seem like the feature isn't working.
- Perform a hard test: Open the patio door and wait exactly 60 seconds. Look at the thermostat display; the "Cooling" text should disappear and be replaced by a "Paused" icon or a message stating the system is paused due to an open window/door.
If That Didn't Work
- Reset the Sensor Pairing: Remove the battery from the sensor for 30 seconds and reinsert it. In the ecobee app, delete the sensor entirely and re-pair it. This forces a new Zigbee handshake between the sensor and the SmartThermostat Premium hub, clearing any cached "closed" states.
- Install a Zigbee Repeater: If your patio door is far from the thermostat, the signal may be too weak to trigger a real-time pause. Plug in a powered ecobee Smart Plug or any compatible Zigbee repeater halfway between the thermostat and the door to bridge the signal gap.
- Check for Interference: Ensure the sensor is not mounted directly onto a metal door frame. Metal shields the radio frequency. Use a plastic spacer or a 3M adhesive offset to ensure the sensor has a clear line of sight to the interior of the home.
- Update Firmware: Force a thermostat reboot by pulling the unit off the wall backplate for 10 seconds. Upon reboot, it will check for the latest firmware version. Outdated firmware on the Premium model often has bugs related to the Haven subscription handshake.
Heads Up
- Battery Drain: Using sensors for door monitoring drains batteries significantly faster than using them for temperature. Expect to replace the CR2450 or CR2032 batteries every 6-12 months rather than the advertised 2-5 years.
- The 24-Hour Window: If you just subscribed to Haven, the "Pause when Open" feature can take up to 24 business hours to propagate through ecobee's servers. Do not factory reset your thermostat during this window.
- Short Cycling Warning: If you frequently open and close your door, the AC may "short cycle" (turning on and off rapidly), which can damage your compressor. Always set the Pause Duration to at least 15 minutes to protect your HVAC hardware.
- Compatibility: Ensure you are using the actual Smart Sensor (the small white puck) and not a third-party sensor integrated via HomeKit or Alexa, as the "Pause when Open" logic only works with native ecobee hardware.
