Diagnosis
The ecobee SmartThermostat Premium utilizes a logic-based staging system to determine when the heat pump is no longer efficient enough to maintain the setpoint on its own. When auxiliary heat (electric strips or gas furnace) engages too early, it is typically because the "Compressor to Auxiliary Heat Delta" is set too low. This setting defines the temperature gap between the current indoor temperature and the desired setpoint at which the thermostat decides the heat pump is "struggling" and triggers the backup heat to assist. If this delta is set to 1°F or 2°F, the system will trigger expensive auxiliary heat almost immediately after the heat pump starts if the room doesn't warm up instantly. This often happens in homes with poor insulation or during moderate cold snaps where the heat pump is actually capable of heating the home, but the thermostat's software is being too aggressive with the backup staging. You can confirm this by observing the thermostat screen: if the "Aux Heat" icon appears while the indoor temperature is only slightly below your target, your thresholds are too tight.
How to Fix It
To stop the auxiliary heat from engaging prematurely, you must manually override the automatic thresholds and increase the temperature differential. Follow these exact steps on your ecobee SmartThermostat Premium interface:
- Tap the Main Menu (three horizontal lines) on the home screen.
- Navigate to Settings and then select Installation Settings.
- Select Thresholds from the list of options.
- Locate the Configure Staging option. By default, this is often set to "Automatic." Change this to Manually to unlock the specific delta settings.
- Select Compressor to Aux Heat Delta.
- Increase the value. If it is currently at 2°F, increase it to 4°F or 6°F. For example, setting this to 5°F means the indoor temperature must drop 5 degrees below your setpoint before the auxiliary heat will kick in.
- Press Done and return to the home screen to save the changes.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the "Heat Pump Lockout" temperature: If your aux heat is turning on regardless of the delta, your lockout temperature may be set too high. In the same Thresholds menu, check the Heat Pump Lockout setting. If this is set to 35°F, the heat pump will shut off and aux heat will take over entirely once the outdoor sensor reads 35°F or lower. Lower this value to 25°F or 30°F to force the heat pump to work longer in colder weather.
- Inspect the Outdoor Sensor Calibration: The ecobee relies on an outdoor temperature reading (via Wi-Fi or a remote sensor) to determine efficiency. If the thermostat thinks it is -10°F outside when it is actually 30°F, it will trigger aux heat prematurely. Check your home screen's outdoor temperature reading; if it's inaccurate, check for local weather station discrepancies in the device settings.
- Verify the "Aux Heat Maximum Runtime" setting: In the Installation Settings, look for the Aux Heat Max Runtime. If this is set too low, the system may be cycling into aux heat more frequently to avoid long heat pump runs. Increase this duration to allow the heat pump more time to recover the temperature.
- Verify Wiring and C-Wire Stability: Ensure the Y1 and W2/Aux wires are seated firmly in the terminal block. A loose connection on the Y1 (compressor) wire can cause the thermostat to "think" the heat pump failed to engage, triggering a fail-safe jump to auxiliary heat.

- Energy Costs: Increasing the delta will save money on electric bills, but it may result in a slower "warm-up" period when you first raise the temperature in the morning.
- Short Cycling: Avoid setting the delta to an extreme (e.g., 10°F) if you live in a very cold climate, as this can put undue stress on the heat pump compressor by forcing it to run at maximum capacity for hours without assistance.
- Filter Maintenance: A clogged air filter restricts airflow, making the indoor temperature rise slower. This tricks the ecobee into thinking the heat pump is failing, which triggers the aux heat. Change your 20x20 or 16x25 filters every 30-90 days to prevent false aux triggers.
- Sensor Placement: If your thermostat is located near a drafty window or door, it will read a lower temperature than the rest of the house, causing the aux heat to engage even if the living area is warm. Consider using a remote ecobee sensor to average the temperature.
