The ecobee SmartThermostat Premium relies on a distributed sensing network to solve the "single-point failure" of traditional thermostats, where the device only knows the temperature of the hallway where it is mounted. When sensors are placed incorrectly, you experience "thermal ghosting"—where the sensor reports a temperature that doesn't reflect the actual living conditions of the room. This happens because the sensor is reacting to localized micro-climates rather than the ambient air of the space.
Common placement errors include mounting sensors on exterior walls, which are subject to thermal bridging (heat leaking through the wall material), or placing them too close to "ghost heat" sources like lamps, electronics, or direct sunlight. If a sensor is placed directly in the path of a supply vent, it will trigger a "short cycle," telling the thermostat the room is reached the target temperature far sooner than the rest of the room actually is, leaving you cold while the system shuts off.
How to Fix It
To achieve the most accurate ambient temperature and reliable occupancy detection, follow these precise installation steps for each SmartSensor:
- Identify the "Critical Zone": Place sensors in rooms where you spend the most time (Master Bedroom, Living Room, Home Office) or rooms that historically struggle with temperature (the "cold room" or the "sun-baked room").
- Determine Mounting Height: Install the sensor exactly 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) above the floor. This is the "breathing zone" where human activity occurs. Mounting too low captures cooler air settling near the floor; mounting too high captures heat pooling at the ceiling.
- Select a Neutral Wall: Choose an interior wall if possible. If you must use an exterior wall, ensure the sensor is not directly opposite a window or on a wall that receives direct afternoon sun.
- Maintain Clearance Distances: Ensure the sensor is at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from any HVAC supply vents, return air grilles, or ceiling fans. Avoid placing it directly behind a curtain or inside a bookshelf, as this traps air and creates a stagnant pocket that doesn't reflect the room's true temperature.
- Optimize Occupancy Path: Position the sensor so it has a clear line of sight to the primary entrance of the room. The PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor detects motion; if it is tucked behind a chair or sofa, it will fail to trigger the "Follow Me" feature, and your ecobee will ignore the room's temperature during active use.
If That Didn't Work
If you still experience temperature swings or inaccurate readings, try these advanced adjustments:
- The Tabletop Test: Instead of wall-mounting, place the sensor on a side table or shelf in the center of the room for 48 hours. If the readings become more consistent, your wall is likely suffering from thermal bridging, and you should avoid wall-mounting in that specific spot.
- Recalibrate the "Follow Me" Setting: Navigate to the Main Menu > Sensors. Ensure "Follow Me" is enabled. If the system is jumping between rooms too quickly, remove sensors from low-traffic areas to prevent "false occupancy" triggers from pets or moving curtains.
- Adjust for Solar Gain: If a room has floor-to-ceiling windows, move the sensor to the wall furthest from the glass. Even with a 5-foot gap, radiant heat from windows can artificially inflate the sensor's reading by 3-5 degrees.
- Check Battery Health: If a sensor is reporting erratic jumps (e.g., jumping from 68°F to 75°F instantly), replace the CR2032 battery. Low voltage can cause the thermistor to report unstable data.

- Pet Immunity: To avoid "ghost occupancy" caused by pets, mount sensors slightly higher (5 feet) and avoid placing them directly above pet beds or favorite lounging spots.
- Dust Accumulation: Every six months, use a can of compressed air to clean the small vents on the sensor housing. Dust buildup can insulate the internal thermistor, leading to a slow response time.
- Avoid Electronic Interference: Do not mount sensors directly above Wi-Fi routers, gaming consoles, or large amplifiers. The heat generated by these devices will create a localized "heat island" and skew your readings.
- Symmetry: If you have a very large open-concept space, use two sensors at opposite ends of the room and average them in the ecobee settings to get a true mean temperature.
