Diagnosis
This loud grinding or buzzing noise in the Frigidaire EFIC189 is almost always caused by a mechanical obstruction within the ice-harvesting assembly. Specifically, the auger—the spiral screw responsible for pushing the nugget ice from the freezing cylinder into the storage bin—is encountering resistance. When the motor attempts to rotate the auger but cannot move it freely, the motor strains, creating a high-pitched buzzing or a harsh grinding sound as the gears struggle to overcome the blockage. The root cause is typically one of two things: "ice bridging" or a foreign object. Ice bridging occurs when moisture leaks into the chute or the unit is operated in a room that is too warm, causing the nugget ice to melt slightly and then refreeze into a solid block. This block locks the auger in place. Alternatively, a piece of plastic packaging or a stray mineral deposit from hard water can wedge between the auger blade and the cylinder wall. You can confirm this by listening closely to the noise; if the buzzing is rhythmic and coincides with the ice-drop cycle, it is a mechanical jam. If the noise is constant and coming from the bottom, it may be the compressor, but a "grinding" sound is almost exclusively related to the auger system.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to clear the obstruction and reset the harvesting mechanism:
- Immediately unplug the EFIC189 from the wall outlet to prevent the motor from burning out due to the torque strain.
- Remove the ice basket entirely. Use a high-lumen LED flashlight to inspect the ice chute and the area where the ice drops.
- Check for "ice bridges"—solid chunks of ice that have fused to the sides of the chute. If you see a block, do not use a metal screwdriver or knife to chip it away, as you can puncture the evaporator wall. Instead, pour room-temperature (not boiling) filtered water over the ice block to melt the bond.
- Inspect the auger blades. If a foreign object is visible, use a pair of long-reach needle-nose pliers to gently extract it.
- Perform a "Hard Reset" of the ice cycle: With the machine unplugged, wait 30 minutes for any internal frost to soften.
- Plug the unit back in and press the "Reset" button on the back or side of the unit (if applicable to your specific revision) or simply power it on.
- Listen for the first cycle. If the grinding persists, immediately power off and proceed to the alternative solutions.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Defrost Cycle: Unplug the unit and leave the lid open for 24 full hours. This ensures that any ice buildup behind the cylinder—where you cannot see or reach—is completely melted. Often, a "hidden" ice jam occurs behind the auger housing that requires a full thaw to resolve.
- Scale Removal: If you have hard water, calcium deposits can build up on the auger shaft, causing it to grind against the housing. Mix a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% distilled water. Run this through the reservoir and run several cycles. This dissolves the mineral crust that creates the friction.
- Motor Gear Inspection: If the noise is a metallic "clicking" or "grinding" without any ice blockage, the internal plastic gears of the auger motor may have stripped. This requires a teardown of the chassis to inspect the gear assembly. If the gears are stripped, the motor assembly must be replaced as a single unit.
- Air Vent Clearance: Ensure there is at least 6 inches of clearance around the side vents. If the unit overheats, the lubricant in the auger bearings can thin out, leading to increased mechanical noise and friction.

- Avoid Metal Tools: Never use metal picks or screwdrivers to clear ice from the freezing cylinder; the aluminum walls are thin and easily punctured, which will ruin the refrigerant seal and kill the machine.
- Water Quality: Always use filtered water. Using tap water with high mineral content leads to scale buildup on the auger, which is the primary cause of the grinding noise over time.
- Siting: Keep the unit away from heat sources like ovens or direct sunlight. Excessive ambient heat causes the ice to melt and refreeze in the chute, creating the very "bridges" that cause the motor to jam.
- Regular Cleaning: Run a cleaning cycle with the provided cleaning tablet or a mild citric acid solution every 30 days to prevent mineral friction on the moving parts.
