Diagnosis
The blinking blue LED on the Frigidaire EFIC189 is a specific system alert indicating a "Water Low" or "Water Flow Failure" state. When the internal water level sensor (a series of conductive probes) fails to detect sufficient water in the reservoir, or when the pump is running but the flow sensor detects no movement of water into the freezing cylinder, the machine triggers this alert and halts the ice-making cycle to prevent the pump from running dry and overheating.
This issue is typically caused by one of three things: the water level has physically dropped below the minimum threshold, mineral buildup (calcium/scale) has coated the sensor probes preventing them from detecting the water, or the intake filter screen at the base of the reservoir has become clogged with sediment. If the light blinks immediately after a refill, it is almost certainly a sensor or blockage issue rather than a lack of water.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to clear the error and restore ice production:
- Verify Water Level: Remove the water reservoir and fill it with filtered, cold water exactly to the "MAX" fill line. Do not overfill, as this can cause leakage around the lid seal.
- Clean the Intake Screen: Locate the small, circular mesh filter screen at the bottom of the reservoir where it connects to the machine's pump. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and warm water to scrub away any white mineral deposits or slime. If the screen is clogged, the pump cannot pull water, triggering the blue light.
- Clean the Sensor Probes: Look inside the main unit where the reservoir sits. You will see small metal contact points (probes). Gently wipe these with a clean, damp cloth dipped in a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. This removes the "scale" that insulates the probes and tricks the machine into thinking it is empty.
- Power Cycle the Logic Board: Unplug the EFIC189 from the wall outlet for exactly 60 seconds. This clears the temporary error cache on the control board.
- Prime the System: Plug the unit back in and press the "Power" button. If the light still blinks, gently shake the reservoir slightly while it is seated to release any air bubbles trapped in the pump intake.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Deep Descale: If the blue light persists, the internal lines are likely scaled up. Mix 2 tablespoons of citric acid or a dedicated descaling solution with 1 liter of warm water. Pour it into the reservoir and let it sit for 30 minutes. Run a full cleaning cycle or manually trigger the pump by turning the unit on and off until the solution has circulated through the freezing cylinder.
- Check for Air Locks: Sometimes an air bubble gets trapped in the narrow tubing between the reservoir and the pump. With the unit powered on, remove and quickly re-seat the reservoir three times in rapid succession. This "pumping" action can often force the air bubble out and allow water to flow.
- Inspect the Pump Impeller: If you hear a loud humming sound but no water is moving, the pump impeller may be jammed with a piece of debris. Use a flashlight to look into the water intake port; if you see a foreign object, use a pair of needle-nose pliers to carefully remove it.
- Test with Distilled Water: To rule out local water hardness as the immediate cause, drain the unit and try filling it with distilled water. If the blue light disappears, your tap water has an extremely high mineral content that requires a more frequent cleaning schedule.

- Avoid Soap: Never use dish soap or detergents inside the reservoir or on the sensor probes, as the suds can create air pockets that trigger the "Water Low" alert.
- Temperature Matters: Using lukewarm water can slow down the freezing process and may cause the machine to cycle longer, increasing the risk of scale buildup on the probes. Always use chilled water.
- Weekly Maintenance: To prevent the blue light from returning, run a vinegar-water rinse through the system once every two weeks if you live in a hard-water area.
- Avoid Overfilling: Filling past the MAX line can lead to water seepage into the internal electronics, which may cause the LED indicators to malfunction or short circuit.
