The spinning white light on a 2nd Generation HomePod indicates that the device is trapped in a "boot loop" or a suspended state during a firmware update. This occurs when the HomePod's internal operating system (homeOS) encounters a critical error during the handshaking process with Apple's update servers or fails to verify the checksum of a downloaded update package. Because the device is stuck in this pre-boot environment, it cannot process Siri commands or respond to touch inputs. This state is often triggered by a momentary drop in Wi-Fi signal during a background update or a conflict with the HomeKit hub architecture in your residence. To confirm this is a software hang rather than a hardware failure, observe the light pattern: if the white light spins consistently without ever transitioning to the multicolored "welcome" sequence or the steady white "listening" state, the device is unable to load the kernel and is waiting for a manual interrupt or a network recovery signal.
How to Fix It
Since a standard power cycle is insufficient for a boot loop, you must trigger a hardware-level forced restart to clear the temporary cache and force a re-poll of the network.
- Disconnect the power cable from the back of the HomePod 2nd Gen. Ensure the cable is completely removed from the device chassis, not just the wall outlet.
- Wait exactly 15 seconds. This allows the internal capacitors to discharge fully, ensuring the volatile memory is wiped.
- Plug the power cable back into the HomePod and the wall outlet.
- Immediately after the device begins to power up, place your finger firmly on the top touch surface. Do not lift your finger.
- Continue holding the top surface for 10 to 15 seconds. You are looking for the spinning white light to transition into a spinning red light.
- Once you hear the three distinct system beeps and the light turns red, lift your finger immediately.
- Leave the device alone for 5 minutes. It will attempt to boot into a recovery mode, check for a valid OS version, and restart normally.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Network Reset: The HomePod may be stuck trying to authenticate with a router that has assigned it a conflicting IP address. Log into your router settings and "Forget" or delete the HomePod from the device list. Restart your router, then attempt the forced restart sequence again. This forces the HomePod to request a new DHCP lease, which often breaks the boot loop.
- Remove from Home App: Use a paired iPhone or iPad to open the Home app. Find the unresponsive HomePod, tap the three dots (settings), and select "Remove Accessory." Once removed from the iCloud account, the device is freed from its previous configuration and may trigger a factory reset automatically upon the next power cycle.

Temporarily disable the 5GHz band on your router to force the HomePod to connect via the more stable 2.4GHz frequency, which can help it complete a stalled update.
- Check for Interference: Ensure the HomePod is at least 3 feet away from other high-power electronics, such as microwave ovens or wireless baby monitors. Electromagnetic interference can disrupt the initial handshake during the boot sequence, causing the white spinning light to persist.
