Because the HomePod 2 utilizes a high-density internal chassis and a powerful S-series chip, the device generates localized heat. As the internal components heat up during background tasks (like HomeKit automation processing) and cool down during idle periods, the plastic and metal mounts expand and contract, creating a physical "tick" or "pop" sound. This is most prevalent in rooms with fluctuating temperatures or when the device is placed on a surface that traps heat. Alternatively, the noise can be electrical. The HomePod 2 features an amplifier that enters a low-power "sleep" state when no audio is playing. When the system wakes up to check for a network heartbeat or a Siri trigger, the relay or the amplifier circuit can create a momentary DC offset, which manifests as a subtle pop through the woofer. You can confirm this is the cause if the noise coincides with the HomePod's LED array pulsing or if the sound occurs immediately after a "Hey Siri" command is ignored.
How to Fix It
To eliminate electrical pops and minimize thermal noise, follow these precise steps to optimize the device's environment and software state:
- Optimize Placement: Move the HomePod at least 6 inches away from walls and avoid placing it on fabric surfaces (like tablecloths or towels) that trap heat. Ensure it is on a hard, flat surface to allow the base vents to dissipate heat efficiently.
- Isolate Power Interference: If the HomePod is plugged into a crowded power strip or surge protector with high-draw appliances (like a space heater or refrigerator), move it to a dedicated wall outlet. Electrical noise from other devices on the same circuit often manifests as rhythmic popping.
- Refresh the Network Handshake: Open the Home app on your iOS device, navigate to Home Settings > HomePod, and select "Reset HomePod." After the reset, re-pair the device. This clears corrupted cache files that can cause the CPU to spike and overheat, leading to thermal clicking.
- Disable "Listen for Siri" Test: To determine if the noise is caused by the microphone array powering up, go to Settings > Accessibility > Siri and toggle "Always Listen for 'Hey Siri'" to OFF.
