The intermittent disconnection on the HomePod (2nd Gen) is typically caused by a "handshake" failure between the device and the wireless router, specifically when using Mesh Wi-Fi systems or routers with "Band Steering" (Smart Connect) enabled. Because the HomePod 2nd Gen supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, the router frequently attempts to "steer" the device to the 2.4GHz band to preserve 5GHz bandwidth for higher-demand devices. When this transition happens, the HomePod momentarily loses its IP lease, triggering the "I'm having trouble connecting to the internet" error. Furthermore, this issue is often exacerbated by DHCP lease timeouts. If your router is configured with a short lease time (e.g., 24 hours or less), the HomePod may fail to renew its address seamlessly, causing a drop every few hours. You can confirm this by checking your router's system logs for "DHCP Request" or "Deauthentication" events tied to the HomePod's MAC address immediately following a disconnection.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must stabilize the network environment by removing the router's autonomy over band selection and ensuring a permanent network address for the HomePod.
- Access your router's admin panel via a web browser (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
- Locate the Wireless Settings or Advanced Wi-Fi menu.
- Disable Smart Connect or Band Steering. This will allow you to give the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands different SSIDs (network names).
- Rename the 5GHz band to something distinct (e.g., "HomeWiFi_5G") and the 2.4GHz band to another (e.g., "HomeWiFi_2G"). Save and apply changes.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and ensure you are connected to the 5GHz network.
- Open the Home App, long-press your HomePod, tap the gear icon (Settings), and ensure it is synced to the 5GHz SSID.
- While still in the router admin panel, navigate to LAN Settings > DHCP Server > Address Reservation (or Static IP).

If That Didn't Work
