This issue is typically caused by the battery's internal Battery Management System (BMS) triggering a thermal shutdown. In the Milwaukee M18 FUEL system, the battery pack contains thermistors that monitor the temperature of the individual 18650 lithium-ion cells. When you push the 2732-20 circular saw through dense material—such as pressure-treated 2x4s or hardwoods—the motor draws a massive amount of current (amps), which generates rapid heat through internal resistance. Once the internal temperature hits a critical threshold, the BMS cuts power to the tool to prevent "thermal runaway," which could lead to permanent cell degradation or a fire. You can confirm this is a thermal shutdown if the tool stops abruptly and will not restart immediately, but works again after 5-10 minutes of cooling. If the battery is hot to the touch but the tool shuts off almost instantly upon trigger pull, you are likely experiencing a "voltage sag" where the battery can no longer maintain the required current, indicating the cells are worn out. If the tool shuts off without the battery feeling particularly hot, the issue may be a mechanical bind in the blade or a failure in the tool's own electronic overload protection, rather than a battery failure.
How to Fix It
To resolve thermal shutdowns and prolong your battery life, follow these operational adjustments to manage the current draw:
- Check Blade Sharpness: A dull blade increases friction and forces the motor to draw significantly more current. Replace your blade if you see burning on the wood or if the saw requires significant physical force to push. Use a high-tooth-count carbide blade for cleaner cuts or a ripping blade for faster, cooler operation in thick stock.
- Adjust Feed Rate: Stop forcing the saw through the material. Let the blade reach full RPM before entering the cut. If the motor sound begins to bog down (drop in pitch), slightly ease off the pressure to allow the motor to maintain its efficiency.
- Clear the Kerf: Ensure you aren't "pinching" the blade. If the wood sags and closes the cut behind the blade, the friction increases exponentially, causing the battery to overheat in seconds. Use a sacrificial piece of lumber to support the off-cut side.
- Implement Cooling Intervals: If working in high-ambient temperatures (above 100°F), rotate between two batteries. This allows one pack to cool down while the other is in use, preventing the BMS from reaching the shutdown trigger point.
- Verify Battery Seating: Ensure the battery is clicked fully into the tool. A loose connection creates high electrical resistance at the contact points, which generates localized heat and can trick the sensor into shutting down the tool.
If That Didn't Work
- Test with a High-Capacity Pack: Swap your current battery for an M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0 battery. Larger capacity batteries have more cells sharing the load, meaning each individual cell works less hard and generates significantly less heat than a 5.0Ah or 2.0Ah pack.
- Inspect Battery Terminals: Use a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the copper terminals on both the battery and the tool. Carbon buildup or sawdust debris can create resistance, leading to overheating at the connection point.
- Check for Mechanical Binding: Remove the battery and rotate the blade by hand (with the tool off). If you feel any grinding or resistance, the bearings in the 2732-20 may be failing or the blade guard may be rubbing, causing the motor to overwork.
- Perform a Cycle Test: Fully discharge the battery and charge it completely using a Rapid Charger. If the battery fails to hold a charge or jumps from 100% to 0% rapidly during a light cut, the internal cells are chemically depleted and the pack must be replaced.

- Avoid Extreme Heat: Never leave your M18 batteries in a hot vehicle or direct sunlight; storing them above 130°F (54°C) permanently reduces their capacity and increases the likelihood of thermal shutdowns.
- Charging Safety: Only use genuine Milwaukee M18 chargers. Third-party chargers often lack the precise voltage regulation needed for FUEL-series batteries and can damage the BMS.
- Storage Voltage: If storing the tool for more than 30 days, keep the battery at approximately 40-60% charge. Storing a battery completely drained can lead to "deep discharge," making it impossible to recharge.
- Fire Warning: If a battery pack becomes physically swollen or emits a sweet, metallic smell, stop using it immediately and dispose of it at a hazardous waste facility.
