The instability of the side handle on the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Circular Saw (2732-20) typically stems from a failure in the mechanical interface between the handle's mounting bracket and the tool's gear housing. Because this saw generates significant torque and vibration during heavy rip cuts, any slight gap in the seating of the handle allows the tool to "walk" out of the bracket. This is often caused by sawdust accumulation inside the mounting slots, which prevents the handle from seating flush against the metal housing, or a worn-out internal tension spring within the rotating collar. To confirm the root cause, remove the handle and inspect the mounting slots on the saw's body for compacted debris or metal burrs. If the handle rotates freely even when the collar is tightened to its maximum limit, the internal plastic threading of the collar has likely stripped or the compression ring has lost its elasticity. This creates a dangerous situation where the saw can kick back or shift unexpectedly during a cut, potentially leading to injury or ruined workpieces.
How to Fix It
To properly secure the side handle and ensure it remains locked during high-torque operation, follow these precise steps:
- Remove the side handle entirely from the saw. Use a compressed air canister or a stiff nylon brush to thoroughly clean the mounting slots on the gear housing. Ensure no sawdust or metal shavings are trapped in the recessed areas where the handle hooks engage.
- Inspect the rotating collar on the handle. Fully unscrew the collar by rotating it counter-clockwise until it reaches its maximum extension.
- Align the handle's mounting hooks precisely with the slots on the 2732-20 housing. Push the handle firmly inward until you feel it "click" or seat completely flush against the tool body. There should be zero gap between the handle bracket and the saw housing.
- Rotate the black collar clockwise. Do not just tighten it until it stops; apply firm downward pressure on the handle while rotating the collar to jam the bracket into the housing.
- Tighten the collar until it is hand-tight, then give it an additional 1/4 turn of torque. The collar should be compressed tightly against the housing to create a friction lock.
