The loud knocking sound occurring during the ice-drop cycle in the SenCre 26.5Lbs Countertop Ice Maker is typically caused by mechanical misalignment of the evaporator assembly or the ice-shoveling mechanism. Because these units use a rapid-cycle freeze-and-release system, the internal components are subject to significant vibration. During shipping, the unit can be jostled, causing the mounting brackets of the refrigeration assembly to shift slightly or the plastic auger to unseat from its drive shaft. When the machine enters the "harvest" phase—where it rotates the evaporator pins to push the ice cubes into the basket—a loose component will strike the inner plastic housing or the metal chassis. This creates a rhythmic, metallic knocking sound that repeats every 6 to 10 minutes. You can confirm this by placing your hand on the side of the unit during the noise; if you feel a sharp vibration coinciding with the knock, it is a physical obstruction or loose mounting screw rather than a compressor failure. If the sound is a high-pitched whine, it is a pump issue, but a "knocking" specifically points to the mechanical drive assembly.
How to Fix It
To resolve this mechanical knocking, you need to ensure the drive assembly is seated and the chassis screws are tightened to prevent "chatter." Follow these steps exactly:
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and let the unit sit for 10 minutes to allow any residual frost on the evaporator pins to melt.
- Remove the ice basket and the plastic scoop to gain full access to the interior cavity.
- Locate the white plastic auger/shoveling assembly. Apply firm, downward pressure on the center of the auger to ensure it is fully seated on its drive shaft. If it has shifted upward during transit, it will hit the top of the housing during rotation.
- Using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, locate the four mounting screws that secure the internal motor and refrigeration bracket to the rear wall of the machine. These are often slightly loosened during factory assembly or shipping. Tighten each screw firmly, but do not over-torque them to the point of stripping the plastic housing.
- Check the leveling of the machine. Place a bubble level on top of the unit. If the machine is tilted forward or backward, the auger may rub against the side of the reservoir. Adjust the surface or use a shim to ensure the unit is perfectly level.
- Plug the unit back in and run one full cycle (approximately 6 minutes) to verify the sound has ceased.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Foreign Objects: Inspect the bottom of the ice reservoir for small pieces of shipping Styrofoam or plastic wrap that may have fallen inside during unboxing. - Compressor Mount Inspection: If the noise is coming from the bottom of the unit rather than the top, the compressor mounting springs may have shifted. Carefully tilt the unit back and check if the rubber vibration pads at the base are flush against the table. If the unit is wobbling on a non-flat surface, the compressor will knock against the outer shell.
- Internal Sensor Alignment: Ensure the "Ice Full" infrared sensor is clean. If the sensor is malfunctioning, it may trigger the harvest cycle prematurely or unevenly, causing the motor to jerk and create a knocking sound. Wipe the sensor lens with a dry microfiber cloth.

- Initial Stabilization: After receiving a new unit, let it stand upright and unplugged for at least 24 hours before the first use. This allows the refrigerant oil to settle in the compressor, preventing premature wear and loud operational noises.
- Cleaning Cycle: Run the self-cleaning mode once every two weeks. Scale buildup around the auger can cause the mechanism to "stutter" during the release phase, mimicking the sound of a loose part.
- Avoid Overfilling: Do not force the ice basket into the unit if it is overfilled. Forcing the basket down can bend the internal sensor arms, leading to erratic motor behavior and knocking.
