The "Error 1" notification on the Roborock Q7 Max indicates a "Main Brush Jammed" state. This occurs when the onboard sensors detect that the main roller brush cannot complete a full rotation or is meeting excessive resistance, triggering a safety shutdown to prevent the drive motor from overheating or burning out. While it may seem like the brush is spinning, the sensor is often triggered by a "micro-jam" where the brush is spinning but slipping on the drive gear. This is most commonly caused by long hair, synthetic fibers, or thick threads winding tightly around the end caps of the roller. Over time, these fibers migrate past the brush's built-in guards and wrap directly around the bearing and the motor axle. This creates a physical choke point that increases friction until the motor reaches its current limit. You can confirm this by attempting to spin the brush manually after removing it; if there is any resistance or if the brush doesn't spin freely on its axis, the jam is confirmed.
How to Fix It
To resolve Error 1 and restore functionality to your Q7 Max, follow these precise steps to deep-clean the drive assembly:
- Power down the unit by holding the power button for 3 seconds until the lights go off.
- Flip the robot vacuum over onto a soft surface to avoid scratching the top chassis.
- Locate the main brush cover. Press the two release tabs on the sides of the plastic frame and lift the cover away from the body.
- Grasp the main roller brush and pull it straight out of the housing.
- Remove the plastic end caps from both sides of the brush. These caps snap off; you may need a small flat-head screwdriver to gently pry them if they are jammed with hair.
- Use a pair of scissors or a seam ripper to cut through the hair and thread wound around the brush core and the axle. Ensure you remove every single strand from the bearings, as even a small amount of friction can trigger the sensor.
- Inspect the interior of the vacuum housing. Use a vacuum or a dry cloth to remove any clumps of debris lodged in the corners where the brush meets the drive gear.
- Reinstall the end caps, slide the brush back into the housing, and snap the cover back into place.
- Power the unit back on and run a "Spot Clean" to verify the error has cleared.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for "Hidden Debris" in the drive gear. Sometimes a small pebble or a piece of hard plastic gets wedged between the brush and the motor gear inside the chassis. Use a flashlight to look deep into the drive socket; if you see a foreign object, use needle-nose pliers to extract it.
- Inspect the brush for warping. If the main roller has been exposed to high heat or is severely worn, it may be slightly bowed. A warped brush will rub against the plastic housing, creating enough friction to trigger Error 1. If the brush looks uneven, replace it with a genuine Roborock Q7 Max replacement roller.
- Test the "Drive Wheel" interference. Occasionally, a piece of string can wrap around the main drive wheels (the large rubber wheels), which the software occasionally misidentifies as a brush jam. Check the gap between the wheel and the chassis for any wrapped hair or threads.
- Perform a Hard Reset. If the brush is physically clear but the error persists, the sensor may be "stuck" in a fault state. Hold the Reset button (located under the small cover near the power button) with a paperclip for 5 seconds, then restart the device.

- Clean the brush ends every two weeks, even if the robot isn't reporting an error. This prevents the "tightening" effect that leads to motor strain.
- Avoid using the Q7 Max on high-pile "shag" carpets if possible, as these fibers frequently wrap around the brush and trigger Error 1 more often than on low-pile or hard floors.
- Never use water to clean the main brush roller; moisture trapped in the bearings can cause rust and permanent friction, leading to recurring sensor errors.
- Always ensure the brush cover is snapped fully into place. If the cover is loose, the brush can shift off-axis during operation, causing it to rub against the frame.
