Diagnosis
The presence of streaks and a thin film of gray water on laminate floors indicates a failure in the "recovery" phase of the cleaning cycle. In a Tineco Floor One S5, the machine is designed to dispense a precise amount of water through the roller and immediately vacuum it back into the Dirty Water Tank (DWT). When you see a film, the suction is either insufficient to pull the liquid back or the roller has become "saturated," meaning it is holding more water than the vacuum can pull away in a single pass. This often happens because of a partial blockage in the suction intake or a buildup of debris within the roller housing that creates a gap, allowing water to bypass the suction stream. On laminate specifically, which is non-porous, any excess moisture that isn't instantly recovered will settle and dry into a visible streak of concentrated cleaning solution and suspended dirt. You can confirm this by performing a "dry test": run the machine over a dry area of the floor; if the roller feels excessively damp or "squishy" immediately after a short burst of water, the recovery system is failing.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to restore the suction balance and eliminate streaking:
- Power down the unit and remove the Dirty Water Tank. Inspect the rubber gasket seal at the top of the tank; if there is a hair or piece of debris on the seal, the vacuum will lose the airtight seal required for high-pressure suction, leading to streaks.
- Remove the microfiber roller by pulling the release tab. Inspect the roller for "matting"—where the fibers are clumped together with grease or hair. If the roller is gray or brown, it cannot effectively move water toward the suction inlet.
- Locate the suction intake port directly behind where the roller sits. Use a flashlight to check for "slugs" of wet debris (like clumps of pet hair or thick dust) that may be partially blocking the throat of the vacuum. Use a long pipe cleaner or a flexible brush to clear this area.
- Empty the Dirty Water Tank completely, even if it is only half-full. A tank that is too full increases the internal air pressure, which can slightly reduce the efficiency of the suction motor.
- Rinse the roller under warm water until the water runs clear, then spin-dry it or let it air dry for 30 minutes. A completely saturated roller will always leave a film regardless of suction strength.
- Reassemble the unit and ensure the Dirty Water Tank "clicks" firmly into place. Run the machine on "Max" mode for 10 seconds over a small wet patch to verify that the water is being lifted instantly.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for a "Vacuum Leak" in the chassis. Inspect the area where the Dirty Water Tank meets the main body. If the plastic housing is cracked or the seal is warped, air will leak in, and the machine will lose the ability to pull water off the floor. You may need to apply a small amount of silicone sealant to hairline cracks in the tank housing.
- Perform a deep-clean of the roller housing. Over time, a layer of slime (biofilm) can build up inside the plastic casing where the roller spins. This disrupts the airflow. Use a damp cloth with a mild detergent to scrub the interior walls of the roller compartment.
- Switch your cleaning solution. If you are using a third-party soap or a high-sudsing detergent, the bubbles create "air pockets" in the suction stream. These bubbles block the water from being recovered, leaving a soapy film. Flush the system using only distilled water for one full cycle to remove residue.
- Inspect the motor exhaust filter. If the filter at the back of the machine is clogged with fine dust, the motor cannot move air efficiently through the system. Remove the filter, tap it out firmly, and wash it with water. Let it dry completely (24 hours) before reinstalling.

- Avoid using "Max" mode on laminate floors unless absolutely necessary; the high water flow can easily overwhelm the recovery system, leading to the exact streaks you are experiencing.
- Always use the Tineco-branded cleaning formula or a very diluted neutral pH cleaner. Thick detergents create surface tension that prevents the vacuum from "lifting" the water.
- Run the self-cleaning cycle after every single use. This prevents the "sludge" buildup in the roller housing that eventually restricts suction.
- Replace the microfiber roller every 3-6 months depending on usage. Once the fibers lose their elasticity, they can no longer "push" the water into the suction stream.
