DIAGNOSIS A grinding or scraping noise during the spin is almost always something caught between the inner wash basket and the outer tub, or a worn-out drive system component like the coupler or transmission.
FIX First, rule out the easy stuff. 1) Unplug the washer. 2) Manually spin the inner basket by hand. Listen and feel for any scraping. 3) Look closely around the edge of the basket and the inside of the outer tub (through the holes) for a bra wire, coin, or small piece of metal that got wedged in there. If you find something, try to carefully fish it out with needle-nose pliers.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the basket spins freely and you find nothing, the noise is likely internal. On these models, a plastic coupler between the motor and transmission is designed to break to save the motor. If it's stripped, you get a loud grinding with little or no spin. Replacing that coupler is a common, moderately involved repair.
HEADS UP If you go fishing for objects, be gentle. Scratching the enamel on the basket or tub can lead to rust. If it's the coupler, you'll need to tip the machine back and remove the front panel—get help, it's heavy.
