my wen inverter generator keeps shutting off when i plug in my space heater. what's going on?

You're overloading it. The 56203i produces 1600 running watts. A space heater can draw 1500 watts by itself, leaving no room for anything else.

  • Immediate fix: Unplug the space heater. Add up the rated wattage of everything you're trying to run. The total must be under 1600 watts.
  • Check the device's label for its amp or watt rating. If not listed, estimate: Amps x 120V = Watts. A 10-amp device uses 1200 watts.
  • If your total load is correct and it still trips, your power cords might be too long or thin. They drain power. For a 10-amp/1200W load, use at least a 14-gauge extension cord.

If that didn't work: The Eco-Mode switch might be on. Turn Eco-Mode OFF when starting the generator and when connecting high-demand appliances. It adjusts engine speed based on load and can sometimes cause a stumble with a sudden, large load.

Heads up: Never exceed the generator's capacity. It has overload protection to save itself and your devices. If you need more power, you can parallel two WEN generators using the WEN 56421 Parallel Connection Kit.
