opal 2.0 making a loud grinding or whining noise, sounds like it's struggling, is it broken?

— asked by Morgan

DIAGNOSIS The auger motor is straining. This is almost always caused by ice nuggets fusing together in the bin, creating a solid block the auger cannot easily break.

FIX Power off and unplug the unit. Remove all ice from the storage bin. Check for and break up any large, fused clumps. Manually rotate the auger in the bin to ensure it moves freely. Plug in and restart. The noise should stop.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If noise persists with an empty bin, the issue is internal. The evaporator plate might be over-frosting. Unplug for 24 hours to allow a complete, natural defrost. This resolves most internal ice blockages.

HEADS UP Prevent this by not letting ice sit unused for extended periods, especially in humid environments. The nuggets are designed to slightly fuse; regular use prevents large blocks.
