Question 1

filled the ink tanks but now it's leaking blue ink inside the printer

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS This issue typically occurs when the ink is overfilled beyond the upper limit line or when the ink is poured too quickly, causing air bubbles to trap ink in the ventilation channels. The Canon PIXMA G7020 uses a vacuum-pressure system to move ink from the MegaTank reservoirs to the print head. If ink enters the air vent channels—the small gaps designed to let air in as ink goes out—it creates a siphon effect. This disrupts the pressure balance, forcing excess cyan ink to leak out of the tank seals and pool in the bottom of the printer chassis. You can confirm this by checking the ink level indicators on the front of the tanks. If the ink level is above the maximum fill line, or if you see ink clinging to the underside of the rubber tank caps, the seal has been compromised. Additionally, if you notice "beading" of ink around the tank's plastic rim, it indicates that surface tension was broken during the refill process, allowing ink to migrate into the internal cavity of the printer. FIX Follow these steps precisely to stop the leak and prevent permanent damage to the electronic components of the G7020: Immediately power off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to avoid short-circuiting the main board if ink reaches the electronics. Open the scanning unit/cover to access the ink tanks. Use a high-absorbency lint-free cloth or heavy-duty paper towels to blot up all standing blue ink from the bottom of the printer tray. Do not scrub, as this can push ink deeper into the chassis. Carefully remove the Cyan ink tank if your specific regional model allows for tank removal; if the tanks are integrated, use a syringe to carefully extract any ink that is above the upper fill line. Remove the rubber tank caps. Use a dry cotton swab to clean the rim of the tank and the underside of the rubber seal. Any ink residue on the seal prevents an airtight lock, which is critical for the vacuum system. Inspect the air vent holes (the small apertures near the caps). If ink is pooled here, use a vacuum or a dry swab to clear it. The vent must be completely clear of liquid for the pressure to equalize. Re-seat the rubber caps firmly, ensuring they "click" or sit flush against the plastic. Plug the printer back in and perform a "Nozzle Check" print to ensure the ink flow has stabilized. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Perform a System Cleaning: If the ink is still leaking slowly, the internal pressure may be unbalanced. Go to the printer menu: Setup > Maintenance > System Cleaning. This process uses a significant amount of ink to purge the lines and reset the pressure, which often stops siphoning leaks. Inspect the Ink Tubes: Open the cover and look at the translucent ink tubes leading to the print head. If you see large air gaps or "bubbles" mixed with the blue ink, the vacuum is broken. You may need to run a "Ink Flush" (found in the Maintenance menu), though be aware this consumes a large portion of your ink tanks. Check for Tank Cracks: Inspect the plastic walls of the Cyan tank for hairline fractures. If the tank was squeezed or dropped during the refill, a micro-crack can allow ink to seep out under the pressure of the ink's own weight. If cracked, the tank assembly must be replaced. Clean the Absorption Felt: If the ink has leaked into the bottom waste pads, you may see "Ink Low" or "Waste Ink Full" errors soon. Use a vacuum with a narrow nozzle to remove as much liquid ink as possible from the bottom of the unit before it soaks into the internal sponges. HEADS UP Never fill the ink tanks past the upper limit line; overfilling is the #1 cause of leaks in the G7020 series. Always ensure the printer is on a perfectly level surface. If the printer is tilted, the ink will pool on one side of the tank, causing the air vents to flood. Avoid using third-party "compatible" inks that have a different viscosity than genuine Canon ink, as thinner inks are more prone to siphoning and leaking through the seals. When refilling, pour the ink slowly down the side of the tank to avoid creating air bubbles and foam, which can displace ink into the ventilation channels.

Question 2

trying to scan from the flatbed and it just says 'check document cover' won't start

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS The "Check Document Cover" error on the Canon PIXMA G7020 is triggered by a failure in the physical interlock mechanism. The printer uses a small plastic actuator—a physical "finger"—that must be depressed into a recessed sensor switch when the scanner lid is closed. If the lid is not seated perfectly flush against the chassis, or if the actuator is bent or obstructed, the printer assumes the lid is open and halts the scan to prevent light leakage or mechanical interference. This issue is frequently caused by "lid creep," where the plastic hinges warp slightly over time, or by debris trapped in the hinge gutter. In some cases, if you are scanning a thick book or a folder, the added height prevents the lid from depressing the sensor fully. To confirm this is a sensor issue, try gently pressing down on the center of the scanner lid while initiating the scan; if the error disappears, the problem is a physical alignment or obstruction issue rather than a software glitch. FIX Follow these steps to reset the sensor and ensure a proper seal: Open the scanner lid fully and inspect the hinge area. Use a flashlight to look for small scraps of paper, staples, or plastic shards that may have fallen into the gap between the lid and the main body. Locate the small plastic tab (the actuator) on the underside of the lid. Ensure it is not bent outward or snapped. If it is slightly bent, gently nudge it back into its original vertical alignment. Clear the glass platen of all debris. Ensure there is no thick cardboard or heavy binding preventing the lid from closing flat. If scanning a thick document, do not force the lid; instead, place a heavy book on top of the lid to apply targeted pressure to the sensor area. Perform a Hard Power Reset: While the printer is on, pull the power cord directly from the back of the G7020. Wait 60 seconds. Plug it back in and power on. This clears the temporary volatile memory (NVRAM) that may be holding the error state. Check the "Scan" settings on the printer's LCD panel. Navigate to Setup > Device Settings > Scan settings and ensure the source is set to "Platen" rather than "ADF" (Automatic Document Feeder), as selecting the wrong source can sometimes trigger cover warnings. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Inspect the ADF Plastic Guides: The G7020 has an integrated Automatic Document Feeder. If the plastic guides on the top tray are shifted or if a piece of paper is jammed in the ADF rollers, the printer may misinterpret this as the document cover being open. Open the ADF cover and clear any hidden paper scraps. Update the Firmware: Outdated firmware can cause "ghost" errors where the sensor is triggered incorrectly. Use the Canon PRINT app or the PC utility to check for firmware updates. Select "Check for Updates" and apply any available patches to the system logic. Clean the Sensor Recess: Use a can of compressed air to blow out the small hole/slot where the lid actuator enters the printer body. Dust buildup in this specific hole can prevent the switch from clicking fully into the "closed" position. Test via Software Override: Try initiating the scan from the Canon IJ Scan Utility on your computer rather than the printer's physical buttons. Sometimes the software can bypass the "lid open" warning if the sensor is marginally failing but still functional. HEADS UP Avoid using glass cleaner containing ammonia on the scanner bed, as it can degrade the plastic seals around the sensor area over time. Never force the scanner lid shut when scanning thick manuscripts; forcing the lid can snap the plastic actuator, requiring a full replacement of the scanner assembly. Keep the ADF tray clear of loose staples or paper clips, as these frequently fall into the internal mechanism and trigger false "cover open" or "paper jam" errors. If the printer is kept in a high-humidity environment, the plastic hinges can swell slightly, leading to intermittent sensor failures. Keep the unit in a climate-controlled area.

Question 3

my computer says the printer is offline even though it's on and connected to wifi

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS The "Offline" status on a Canon PIXMA G7020 is rarely a physical disconnection and is usually a communication breakdown between the Windows Print Spooler and the printer's network interface. This occurs when the printer enters a deep sleep state or when the router assigns a new dynamic IP address (DHCP lease expiration) that doesn't match the port configuration stored in your computer's registry. Essentially, your PC is sending data to an "address" that the printer is no longer listening to. You can confirm this by checking the printer's current IP address via the onboard LCD screen. Navigate to Network Settings > Confirm LAN Settings. If the IP address listed there differs from the one found in the printer properties on your PC, the handshake is broken. Additionally, if the "Use Printer Offline" toggle is checked in the print queue, Windows will ignore any active network connection entirely, keeping the status as "Offline" regardless of the actual hardware state. FIX To restore the connection and force the computer to recognize the G7020, follow these exact steps: On the G7020 control panel, press the Setup button (wrench icon). Use the arrow buttons to navigate to Device settings > LAN settings > Confirm LAN settings. Note the IPv4 address (e.g., 192.168.1.15). On your Windows PC, open the Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. Right-click the Canon G7020 series icon and select See what's printing. In the print queue window, click the Printer menu at the top left. Ensure that Use Printer Offline and Pause Printing are both unchecked. If they were checked, unchecking them often restores the connection immediately. If it remains offline, go back to Devices and Printers, right-click the G7020, and select Printer Properties. Navigate to the Ports tab. Click Configure Port. If the IP address listed here does not match the one you noted from the printer's LCD screen, you must update it or switch the port to a "Standard TCP/IP Port" using the current IP. Click Apply and then OK. Restart the Print Spooler by opening services.msc, finding Print Spooler, right-clicking it, and selecting Restart. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Assign a Static IP: Log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and find the DHCP reservation list. Assign a permanent IP address to the MAC address of your G7020. This prevents the "Offline" error from recurring every time the router refreshes its IP leases. Disable SNMP Status: In the Printer Properties > Ports > Configure Port menu, uncheck the box labeled SNMP Status Enabled. This feature often incorrectly reports a printer as offline if the printer is in a low-power sleep mode, even if it is perfectly capable of printing. Reset the Network Stack: On the printer, go to Setup > Device settings > LAN settings > Reset LAN settings. This clears the cached network profile. After resetting, use the "Wireless LAN setup" to reconnect the printer to your SSID from scratch. Firewall Exception: Check your antivirus or Windows Defender Firewall. Ensure that the ports 80, 443, and 161 (UDP) are open for the Canon G7020 driver. Sometimes a security update will suddenly block the communication port, triggering an offline status. HEADS UP Avoid "Generic" Drivers: Never use the Windows Class Driver. Always install the full Canon G7020 driver package from the official site to ensure the bidirectional communication (which monitors ink levels and status) works correctly. Power Cycle Sequence: If the printer disappears again, always power cycle in this order: Router first, then Printer, then PC. This ensures the DHCP handshake happens in the correct sequence. Avoid 2.4GHz/5GHz Split: The G7020 supports 2.4GHz. If your router uses "Smart Connect" (merging both bands), the printer may occasionally drop the connection. If stability is an issue, create a dedicated 2.4GHz guest network for your printer.

Question 4

the black text from my g7020 looks faded or has streaks even after cleaning

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS The Canon PIXMA G7020 utilizes a dual-ink system: a pigment-based black ink (PGBK) for crisp text and dye-based colors for photos. The PGBK ink contains larger particles that are prone to settling and drying out faster than the color inks. When you see faded text or horizontal white streaks (banding) despite running a standard cleaning, it indicates that the print head nozzles are partially obstructed by dried pigment residue or that air bubbles have entered the ink feed lines. This issue is common if the printer sits idle for more than 7-10 days or if the printer was moved without locking the ink valves. To confirm this is a nozzle issue rather than a software setting, print a "Nozzle Check" pattern from the maintenance menu. If the black grid shows gaps, streaks, or is entirely missing while the colors look perfect, the problem is localized to the PGBK print head. If the lines are present but faint, the ink flow is restricted, likely due to air pockets in the tubes leading from the MegaTank reservoirs to the print head. FIX When standard cleaning fails, you must escalate to a Deep Cleaning or an Ink Flush. Follow these precise steps: On the printer's home screen, press the Setup button (pliers/screwdriver icon). Navigate to Device settings > Maintenance. Select Deep Cleaning. When prompted, select All colors (even if only black is fading, this ensures the print head alignment remains synchronized). Allow the process to complete without interrupting the printer. This takes significantly longer than a standard clean and uses a larger volume of ink to force debris out of the nozzles. Once complete, print a Nozzle Check pattern. If the black block is still streaky, repeat the Deep Cleaning one more time. If the issue persists after two deep cleanings, perform an Ink Flush. Go to Maintenance > Ink Flush. Note: This is a high-volume operation that consumes a significant amount of ink and fills the maintenance cartridge (waste ink absorber) faster. Only perform this if the ink tubes are visibly empty of ink. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Manual Print Head Cleaning: If the ink is completely dried, you may need to physically clean the print head. Open the scanning unit, remove the black print head (marked 'B'), and gently blot the bottom nozzle plate onto a damp, lint-free paper towel soaked in distilled water. Do not scrub; simply press it down to "pull" the clog out. Verify Ink Valve Position: Ensure the ink valves are fully open. If you recently transported the printer, the valves may have been closed to prevent leaks. If the valves are closed, the print head will starve for ink regardless of how many cleaning cycles you run. Check Paper Settings: Ensure you are not using "Plain Paper" settings on high-gloss photo paper. This can cause the pigment black ink to bead up or streak because it cannot soak into the glossy coating. Change the media type in the print driver to "Photo Paper Plus Glossy II" to force the printer to use the dye-based black instead of the pigment black. Replace the Print Head: If the PGBK nozzles are permanently scorched or clogged, the print head (Part No: BH-20) must be replaced. This is a user-replaceable part on the G7020 and does not require a technician. HEADS UP Print Weekly: To prevent pigment settling, print at least one page of black text every 7 days. This keeps the ink moving and prevents the nozzles from drying. Ink Levels: Never let the ink tanks fall below the minimum line. If air enters the internal tubing during a "dry" run, it can take multiple Ink Flushes to clear, which wastes a massive amount of ink. Use Genuine Ink: Third-party pigment inks often have different particle sizes that can clog the G7020's precision nozzles, leading to permanent head failure. Avoid Over-Cleaning: Do not run more than three Deep Cleanings in a 24-hour period. This can cause the print head to overheat or prematurely fill the waste ink pads, triggering a "5B00" error code.

Question 5

printer says 'support code 6000' and the orange light is flashing, can't do anything

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS Support Code 6000 on the Canon PIXMA G7020 is a critical carriage malfunction error. It indicates that the printer's internal logic has detected an obstruction or a mechanical failure preventing the print head carriage from reaching its "home" position or moving freely across the encoder strip. This is rarely a software glitch and is almost always a physical blockage or a sensor failure. The error typically triggers when the carriage hits a physical stop—such as a torn piece of paper, a dislodged ink tank cap, or a foreign object—or when the transparent encoder strip (the thin plastic ribbon running across the width of the printer) becomes smudged with ink or grease. If the sensor cannot read the timing marks on the strip, the printer halts all operations to prevent the motor from burning out or the carriage from crashing into the side walls. You can confirm this by attempting to power on the device; if you hear a loud grinding noise or a sharp "thump" before the orange light flashes, there is a physical obstruction. FIX To resolve Support Code 6000, you must clear the mechanical path and reset the carriage positioning. Follow these exact steps: Power off the printer using the power button and disconnect the AC power cord from the wall outlet. This is vital to discharge the capacitors and reset the carriage motor. Open the scanning unit/cover to expose the interior. Carefully reach inside and check for any small scraps of paper, staples, or paperclips. Use a flashlight to look specifically at the far right and far left ends of the carriage rail. Gently grasp the print head carriage and attempt to slide it manually from one side to the other. If it resists or feels "springy," look for a jammed piece of paper tucked under the carriage rail. Locate the encoder strip—the thin, clear plastic strip that runs horizontally across the printer. Use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth or a cotton swab dipped in a tiny amount of distilled water (do not use alcohol) to gently wipe the strip from left to right. Do not pull on the strip, as snapping it will require a full hardware replacement. Ensure the ink tank caps are seated firmly and that no ink has leaked onto the carriage rails, as sticky ink can cause the carriage to drag and trigger the 6000 error. Close the cover, plug the power cord back in, and power on the device. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Perform a Hard Logic Reset: With the printer on and showing the error, unplug the power cord from the back of the machine. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds to drain all remaining electricity. Plug it back in and restart. This forces the carriage to re-home from a zero-point. Inspect the Paper Feed Rollers: Sometimes a jam in the rear tray feeds a piece of paper into the carriage path that isn't visible from the front. Open the rear cover (if applicable) and use a can of compressed air to blow out any debris from the paper feed mechanism. Check for Carriage "Sled" Misalignment: If the printer was recently moved, the carriage may have jumped its track. Carefully lift the carriage slightly and ensure it is seated perfectly on the metal rail. If it is tilted, it will trigger the 6000 error immediately upon startup. Clean the Contact Pins: If the carriage moves but the error persists, the print head contacts may be dirty. Open the printer, lift the print head locking lever, remove the print heads, and gently wipe the gold contact points with a dry cloth before re-inserting them firmly. HEADS UP Avoid Lubricants: Never apply WD-40 or oil to the carriage rails. The PIXMA G7020 uses a specific factory grease; adding one-off lubricants can attract dust and create a sludge that causes the carriage to stick, leading back to Support Code 6000. Handle the Encoder Strip with Care: The encoder strip is extremely fragile. If you accidentally stretch it or snap the spring holding it, the printer will lose its position and the error will become permanent. Paper Quality Matters: Using overly thick cardstock or non-standard labels often leads to "micro-jams"—small tears of paper that accumulate on the rails and eventually trigger carriage errors. Ink Level Maintenance: Always keep your MegaTank reservoirs filled. If the printer runs completely dry, the print heads can overheat and warp, potentially causing them to physically bind against the carriage rail.

Question 6

set up my pixma g7020 but it won't connect to wifi, just keeps failing

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS The Canon PIXMA G7020 frequently fails during the initial wireless setup because its network hardware is exclusively compatible with 2.4GHz bands. Modern "Smart" or "Mesh" routers often use a single SSID (network name) for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, a feature called Band Steering. When the G7020 attempts to handshake with the router, the router often tries to push the printer toward the 5GHz band or fails to negotiate the handshake because the printer cannot "see" the 5GHz signal, resulting in a generic "Connection Failed" or "Cannot connect to wireless LAN" error message. Additionally, this model often struggles with WPA3 security protocols. If your router is set to "WPA3 Only," the G7020 will fail to authenticate even with the correct password. You can confirm this is the issue if your smartphone or laptop connects to the Wi-Fi instantly, but the printer hangs at the "Connecting..." screen for several minutes before timing out. Another common culprit is the "Quiet Mode" or "Eco Mode" settings on some routers that throttle the signal strength during the initial pairing phase, preventing the printer from completing the DHCP request. FIX To bypass the finicky automatic setup wizard, you must perform a Manual Connect directly from the printer's physical control panel. This forces the printer to target the specific 2.4GHz frequency and bypasses the buggy software handshakes of the Canon setup app. Power on the printer and ensure the home screen is displayed. Press the Setup button (represented by a pliers and screwdriver icon). Navigate to Device settings and press OK. Select LAN settings and press OK. Select Wireless LAN setup and press OK. Choose Manual connect from the list. This is critical; do not choose "Standard setup" or "WPS." The printer will now scan for available networks. Wait for the list to populate and select your 2.4GHz network SSID. If you have a combined network, select the one you usually use. Enter your Wi-Fi password using the on-screen alphanumeric keyboard. Note: The keyboard is case-sensitive. Use the arrow keys to toggle between uppercase, lowercase, and symbols. Press OK to confirm the password. The printer will attempt to acquire an IP address. Once the screen displays "Connected," the hardware link is established. On your computer, open the Canon printer driver settings and select "Search for printers on the network" to finalize the software link. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Separate your Router Bands: Log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and disable "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering." Create two distinct SSIDs: one named "Home_Wifi_2.4" and one named "Home_Wifi_5." Connect the G7020 specifically to the 2.4GHz band. This is the most successful long-term fix for Mesh systems like Eero, Nest, or Orbi. Adjust Security Protocol: Change your router's wireless security setting from "WPA3" to "WPA2-AES" or "WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode." The G7020 cannot communicate with WPA3-only encryption, which is now the default on many newer Wi-Fi 6 routers. Assign a Static IP: If the printer connects but then goes "Offline" frequently, use the printer's LAN settings to change "IPv4 Address" from "Auto/DHCP" to "Manual." Assign an IP address outside your router's typical DHCP range (e.g., 192.168.1.200) to prevent IP conflicts. Disable Firewall Temporarily: If the printer is connected to the router but the computer cannot find it, temporarily disable Windows Defender Firewall or macOS Firewall. If the printer suddenly appears, you need to add the Canon "ijnetwork" process to your firewall's allowed exceptions list. HEADS UP Avoid WPS: The Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button method is notoriously unstable on the G7020 and often leads to "Authentication Failed" errors. Always prefer Manual Connect. Ink Maintenance: Since this is a MegaTank model, ensure you do not let the ink levels drop below the lower line on the tanks, as air bubbles in the print head can sometimes cause the printer to report a "General Error" which mimics a connectivity failure in the software. Firmware Updates: Once connected, go to Setup > Device settings > Firmware update. Canon frequently releases patches that improve the stability of the wireless radio. Power Cycle: If the printer loses connection after a power outage, unplug both the router and the printer for 30 seconds. Plug the router in first, wait for it to fully boot, and then plug in the printer to ensure a clean DHCP handshake.

Question 7

canon g7020 making a loud grinding noise when it tries to print, like it's stuck

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS The loud grinding noise in the Canon PIXMA G7020 is almost always caused by a mechanical obstruction preventing the print head carriage from completing its travel path. When the stepper motor attempts to move the carriage and hits a physical block, the gears continue to spin against each other, creating a high-pitched "ratcheting" or grinding sound. This is typically caused by a "paper jam" that hasn't fully cleared, where a small strip of paper (often less than an inch long) is lodged in the far left or right margins of the carriage path. Another common cause is a failure of the plastic encoder strip—the thin, clear translucent ribbon that runs across the width of the printer. If this strip becomes smudged with grease or ink, the printer "loses" the position of the carriage. It may then try to drive the carriage past its physical limit, resulting in a violent grinding noise as the motor fights the physical end-stop. You can confirm this by checking if the carriage slams into the side of the chassis before the noise begins, or if it stops abruptly in the middle of the tray. FIX Power off the printer and disconnect the power cable from the wall to prevent any accidental movement of the carriage during the process. Open the main scanning unit/cover to expose the interior. Using a high-lumen flashlight, inspect the far left and far right ends of the carriage rail. Look for tiny scraps of paper, staples, or paperclips that may have fallen into the track. Gently attempt to slide the print head carriage by hand. If it resists, do not force it. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to extract any visible debris from the gear assembly or the rail. Locate the encoder strip (the clear plastic strip running horizontally behind the carriage). Dampen a lint-free microfiber cloth with a small amount of distilled water or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe the strip from one end to the other. Do not apply heavy pressure, as displacing the strip from its mounting clips will cause a "Carriage Error" (Error B200). Ensure the carriage can now slide smoothly from the far left (home position) to the far right without any clicking or resistance. Plug the unit back in and perform a power reset by holding the power button for 10 seconds. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Check the Rear Tray: Open the rear paper feed slot. Sometimes a piece of paper is folded over inside the feed mechanism, creating tension that pulls the carriage off-track. Use a flashlight to ensure the rollers are clear of any torn paper fragments. Inspect the Ink Valve Lever: On the G7020, ensure the ink transport levers are in the correct "Printing" position. If a lever is partially engaged or jammed, it can physically obstruct the carriage's path during the cleaning cycle. Clear the Paper Output Tray: Check the output tray area for any "accordion-style" jams. If paper is jammed deep in the output slot, it can create back-pressure that prevents the carriage from moving forward, triggering the grinding motor. Lubricate the Carriage Rail: If the grinding is a "dry" sound rather than a "crash," the metal rail may have lost its factory lubrication. Apply a tiny amount of high-grade synthetic grease (lithium-based) to the metal rail using a cotton swab, then slide the carriage back and forth to distribute it. HEADS UP Never use oil-based lubricants (like WD-40) on the carriage rail, as these can attract dust and eventually gum up the motor gears. Avoid touching the encoder strip with your bare fingers; skin oils can create "blind spots" that lead to misalignment and grinding. If you hear a loud "crack" followed by the grinding, the plastic gear on the carriage drive may have stripped. This requires a full replacement of the carriage assembly. Always keep the printer covered when not in use to prevent dust and foreign objects from falling into the open ink tank areas and the carriage track.

Question 8

my new g7020 says it's out of cyan ink but i just filled the tank and it's full, what gives?

Accepted Answer

DIAGNOSIS The Canon PIXMA G7020 MegaTank series does not use electronic sensors or "chips" inside the ink tanks to monitor actual liquid levels. Instead, it relies on a software-based estimation system called "Ink Level Tracking." The printer calculates how many pages have been printed and how many cleaning cycles have occurred to estimate how much ink should be left. When the internal counter reaches a specific threshold, it triggers a "Low Ink" or "Out of Ink" warning, even if the physical tank is brimming with cyan ink. This disconnect usually happens if you have performed several deep cleaning cycles or if you filled the tanks after the printer had already registered the "empty" state. Because the printer is not "seeing" a chip change (since there are no chips on the bottles), it continues to believe the tank is empty. In some cases, this is exacerbated by air bubbles trapped in the ink feed tubes, which prevents the ink from reaching the print head, leading the system to assume the tank is depleted despite the visual evidence. FIX To resolve this, you must manually tell the printer that the ink tanks have been refilled. This overrides the software estimation and resets the ink level monitor for the Cyan tank. Ensure the printer is powered on and sitting at the home screen. Press the Setup button (represented by a gear/screwdriver icon) on the control panel. Use the arrow keys to navigate to Maintenance and press OK. Navigate through the Maintenance menu until you find Ink Level Reset or Reset Ink Levels and press OK. The screen will ask you to select the ink tank that has been refilled. Use the arrows to highlight Cyan (C). Press the OK button to confirm the reset. The screen will ask "Are you sure?"—select Yes. Once the confirmation message "Ink level information has been reset" appears, press OK to return to the main menu. Perform a "Nozzle Check" print from the Maintenance menu to ensure the Cyan ink is flowing correctly to the page. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Perform an Ink Flush: If the software reset is complete but the page is still missing cyan, you likely have air locks in the tubes. Go to Setup > Maintenance > Ink Flush. Warning: This consumes a significant amount of ink and fills the waste absorber quickly, but it forces ink from the tanks through the lines into the print head. Check the Ink Valve Lever: Ensure the ink valve (the small lever used during transport) is set to the "Printing" position. If this lever was accidentally bumped or left in the "Locked" position, ink cannot flow from the tank to the head, triggering a low-ink error. Manual Air Bubble Purge: Open the scanner unit to access the print head carriage. If you see large gaps of air in the cyan tube, you may need to use a priming syringe on the print head intake ports to manually pull ink through the line. Hard Power Cycle: Unplug the power cord from the wall and the printer for exactly 60 seconds. Hold the power button down for 15 seconds while unplugged to discharge the capacitors. Plug it back in and restart; this can sometimes force the logic board to re-poll the ink status. HEADS UP Avoid "Deep Cleaning" Overuse: Running too many deep cleaning cycles will prematurely fill the waste ink absorber, which can lead to a "5B00" error code that locks the printer entirely. Maintain Minimum Levels: Never let the ink levels drop below the bottom line of the tank window. Allowing air to enter the tubes is the primary cause of print head failure in MegaTank models. Print Weekly: To prevent the ink from drying in the nozzles (which the printer interprets as a "clog" or "empty" state), print at least one full-color page every 7 days. Use Genuine GI-20 Ink: Using third-party inks with different viscosities can confuse the flow sensors and lead to inaccurate ink level reporting or permanent print head clogging.
