IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the filter is genuine Winix, it should fit. Aftermarket filters often have dimensional flaws. Use only Winix model # AHP550-2 or TK-550-2 filters. A warped frame is a defect. HEADS UP A loose filter creates an air bypass, drastically reducing cleaning efficiency. It can also let unfiltered air leak past the seals.

the remote control doesn't work anymore, i changed the batteries and it's still dead.

DIAGNOSIS The infrared receiver on the purifier's control panel is blocked or faulty, or the remote is damaged. FIX First, test the remote. Use your phone's camera in selfie mode. Point the remote's LED at the camera and press a button. You should see a purple light flash on your screen. If not, the remote is dead. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the remote works on camera, the IR receiver on the purifier is the issue. Ensure nothing is blocking the dark translucent window on the control panel. Wipe it clean. The receiver is soldered to the main board—if damaged, the board needs service. HEADS UP The remote is not essential for operation. All core functions are on the unit's buttons. it smells weird when i turn it on, kind of like burning plastic or ozone.

DIAGNOSIS Dirty plasma wave plates burning off accumulated dust or a foreign object on the heating element of the pre-filter. FIX Unplug immediately. Remove and thoroughly clean the plasma wave plates as described above. Also remove the washable pre-filter (carbon filter behind it) and inspect for melted plastic or debris. Wash the pre-filter in lukewarm water, air dry. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The smell may be from the actual plasma wave generator malfunctioning and producing excess ozone. Turn Plasma Wave mode OFF in the settings. If smell stops, the generator unit is faulty. HEADS UP Run the unit on high fan speed for 15 minutes in a well-ventilated room after cleaning before reassessing the smell. Persistent electrical burning smell means stop use.

how do i clean the plasma wave thing? the manual is vague and it looks gross.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If a burnt smell persists after cleaning, the emitter needle inside the unit may be damaged. The entire plasma wave assembly may need replacement. HEADS UP Never put the plastic housings in water or dishwasher. Never operate the unit with wet plates. This can cause electrical shorts and ozone smell.

You can run the unit manually, but sensor replacement means a service call. HEADS UP Avoid placing the unit directly next to air fresheners, candles, or humidifiers. Oils and moisture can coat and ruin the optical sensor.

Locate the small glass fuse on the control board near where the power cord attaches. Test it with a multimeter for continuity. If blown, replace it with an identical 250V 2A slow-blow fuse. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The power supply module on the control board may have failed. This requires a board replacement. The part number is typically stamped on the board. HEADS UP Capacitors on the board can hold a charge even when unplugged. Do not touch the board with metal tools unless you know how to safely discharge them.

why is my air purifier making a loud rattling or buzzing noise, it's not the fan speed?

Also check the two plastic plasma wave housings on the sides—press them firmly to ensure they're snapped into place. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The blower wheel shaft may be out of balance or the motor bearings are failing. This requires disassembly and part replacement. Contact Winix support. HEADS UP Always unplug before reaching inside. Do not attempt to lubricate the motor. It is a sealed unit.

my winix 5500-2 is flashing a red check filter light right after i put in new ones, what gives?

DIAGNOSIS The filter reset sensor wasn't triggered. The unit has a mechanical switch behind the filter door that must be pressed. FIX Unplug the unit. Open the front filter door. Firmly press the small white plastic reset button located on the right side of the interior frame. Hold it for 3 seconds. Close the door and plug it back in. The light should reset. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Check that the plastic tab on the filter door itself isn't broken. That tab depresses the reset button when the door closes. If it's broken, the door won't press the button. HEADS UP Never use the reset button to try and extend filter life beyond the actual replacement interval. It's for resetting the timer after a genuine filter change only.
