Instead, it is almost always a "phantom obstacle" or "cliff detection" error. The robot's onboard logic interprets a sensor reading as a critical failure—either thinking it is perched on a ledge or trapped by an invisible wall—and triggers a safety return to the dock to prevent hardware damage.
This typically happens because the infrared (IR) cliff sensors located along the bottom perimeter of the chassis have accumulated a layer of fine dust or pet hair. When the IR beam is blocked or refracted incorrectly, the vacuum "sees" a drop-off (a cliff) where none exists. If the robot perceives it is surrounded by cliffs on all sides, it concludes that it is trapped or unable to navigate, resulting in the premature termination of the cleaning cycle. You can confirm this by placing the robot on a dark-colored rug or a black tile floor; if it triggers the error immediately, the sensors are over-sensitized or dirty.
How to Fix It
To resolve this sensor conflict and restore full cleaning cycles, follow these precise maintenance steps:
- Press the Power button to turn the unit completely off and remove it from the charging dock to ensure no current is flowing through the sensors.
- Flip the robot over onto a soft surface (like a towel) to avoid scratching the top chassis.
- Locate the four to six infrared cliff sensors. These are the small, clear-to-dark plastic windows positioned around the bottom edge of the vacuum.
- Using a clean, dry, lint-free microfiber cloth, wipe each sensor window in a circular motion. Do not use glass cleaner, alcohol, or chemical solvents, as these can strip the IR-transparent coating or leave a residue that causes further refraction errors.
- Check the front bumper for any debris. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the gaps between the bumper and the main body, ensuring no small pebbles or hair clumps are jamming the bumper's physical movement.
- Locate the silver metallic charging contacts on the underside of the robot and the corresponding pins on the dock.
