This issue is caused by "ghost disconnects," where the Sensi ST55 maintains a local connection to your HVAC system (allowing you to change the temperature manually) but loses its handshake with the Emerson cloud servers. Because the ST55 uses a low-power 2.4GHz radio to preserve battery and reduce heat dissipation behind the wall plate, it is highly susceptible to signal interference and "DHCP lease timeouts." When the router reassigns an IP address or the signal dips below a critical threshold, the thermostat momentarily drops the connection. The Sensi app detects this heartbeat failure and triggers a "Device Offline" alert. However, because the ST55 is designed to auto-reconnect aggressively, it often establishes a new link within seconds—too fast for you to notice when looking at the device, but long enough for the server to log a failure and notify your phone. You can confirm this by checking your router's connected devices list to see if the thermostat's IP address is changing frequently or if the signal strength (RSSI) is fluctuating near the -70 dBm mark.
How to Fix It
To stabilize the connection and stop the false alerts, you must move the device from a dynamic IP to a static assignment and optimize the 2.4GHz band. Follow these exact steps:
- Access your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and navigate to the DHCP Reservations or Static IP section.
- Locate the Sensi ST55 in the device list using its MAC address (found on the back of the thermostat unit or in the app settings).
- Assign a permanent IP address to the thermostat. This prevents the "lease timeout" that often triggers the offline alert.
- Change your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi channel from "Auto" to a fixed channel—specifically Channel 1, 6, or 11. These are non-overlapping channels and reduce interference from neighboring networks.
- Set the 2.4GHz channel width to 20MHz instead of 40MHz. The ST55 handles narrow bands more reliably, and the wider 40MHz band is prone to more noise.
- Perform a hard power cycle: Remove the ST55 from the wall plate for 30 seconds, then snap it back in to force a fresh handshake with the new router settings.
If That Didn't Work
- Disable "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering": Many modern routers combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one SSID. The Sensi ST55 only supports 2.4GHz and can become confused when the router tries to "steer" it to 5GHz. Create a separate SSID specifically for 2.4GHz devices (e.g., "HomeWiFi_IoT") and connect the thermostat to that.
- Adjust Firewall/Port Settings: Ensure that TCP Port 80 and Port 443 are open for outbound traffic. If you have a strict firewall or a Pi-hole/AdGuard DNS, whitelist the Emerson Sensi server domains to prevent the thermostat from being blocked during a heartbeat check.
- Install a Dedicated Wi-Fi Access Point: If the thermostat is located behind a brick wall or near large metal appliances, a signal booster may not be enough. Install a dedicated access point within 15 feet of the thermostat to ensure the RSSI remains above -60 dBm.
- Check the C-Wire Power: While the ST55 is designed to work without a C-wire (using power stealing), intermittent connectivity can be a symptom of insufficient power. If you have a C-wire available but it's not connected, wire it in. If you don't have one, consider installing a 24V C-wire adapter kit to ensure the Wi-Fi radio has consistent voltage.

- Avoid Metal Covers: Never install a decorative metal faceplate over the ST55; this acts as a Faraday cage and will drastically increase the frequency of "Device Offline" alerts.
- Router Updates: Whenever you update your router's firmware, the ST55 may lose its connection. Always verify the static IP reservation persists after a router update.
- Battery Check: If you are using the ST55 in a configuration that relies on batteries rather than a C-wire, replace them every 6 months regardless of the reported level, as low voltage directly impacts the Wi-Fi radio's stability.
