This issue occurs when the Sensi ST55's internal Wi-Fi radio loses its handshake with your wireless access point, while the local control circuitry remains powered. Because the ST55 is designed to operate independently of the cloud for basic HVAC control, the physical interface on your wall will continue to regulate temperature via the R, W, Y, and G wires even if the network chip is disconnected. This "split-state" usually happens after a power surge, a router firmware update, or a DHCP lease expiration where the router fails to assign a new IP address to the thermostat. To confirm the hardware is the issue and not just a temporary app glitch, check the Wi-Fi icon on the ST55 display. If the icon is missing, flashing, or showing a strike-through, the device has dropped the connection. If the icon appears solid but the app says "Offline," the issue is likely a communication break between your router's gateway and the Emerson Sensi cloud servers, rather than a local wireless failure.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to re-establish the wireless handshake:
- Press the Menu button on the physical thermostat faceplate.
- Navigate using the arrows to Wi-Fi and press the center selection button.
- Select Reconnect. This forces the ST55 to drop any ghost connections and scan for available SSIDs.
- Scroll through the list of detected networks and select your specific 2.4 GHz SSID.
- Enter your network password using the on-screen keyboard. Note that the ST55 is case-sensitive; ensure Caps Lock is not inadvertently toggled.
- Wait for the Wi-Fi icon to transition from a flashing blue state to a solid blue state. This process can take up to 60 seconds.
- Open the Sensi app on your smartphone and pull down on the home screen to refresh the device status. The "Offline" banner should disappear and be replaced by the current indoor temperature.
If That Didn't Work
- Separate your Wi-Fi Bands: The ST55 only supports 2.4 GHz. If you have a "Smart Connect" or "Dual-Band" router that uses one name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, the thermostat may be trying to authenticate on the 5 GHz band and failing. Log into your router settings (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and give the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands different names (e.g., "Home_WiFi" and "Home_WiFi_5G"). Connect the Sensi specifically to the 2.4 GHz name.
- Power Cycle the Hardware: Remove the ST55 faceplate from the wall bracket for 30 seconds. This performs a hard reset of the Wi-Fi chip without erasing your programmed schedules. Snap it back into the bracket and wait 2 minutes for the boot sequence to complete before attempting the "Reconnect" steps again.
- Disable AP Isolation: Check your router's advanced wireless settings for "AP Isolation," "Client Isolation," or "Guest Mode." If enabled, these settings prevent wireless devices from communicating with each other or the local gateway, which can cause the Sensi app to report the device as offline even if the thermostat shows a connection.
- Assign a Static IP: If the ST55 drops connection frequently, use your router's DHCP reservation table to assign a permanent IP address to the thermostat's MAC address. This prevents the "Offline" status caused by IP conflicts during lease renewals.

- C-Wire Requirement: Ensure you have a C-wire (Common wire) connected. While the ST55 can function without one in some configurations, unstable Wi-Fi connections are often caused by "power stealing" issues where the device doesn't have enough consistent voltage to maintain the Wi-Fi radio.
- Signal Interference: Avoid placing large metal objects or mirrors directly between the thermostat and the router, as these can cause signal attenuation and intermittent drops.
- Firmware Updates: When the device is back online, leave it connected for at least 24 hours. The ST55 often pushes firmware updates in the background; interrupting power during an update can lead to a boot loop.
