Diagnosis
This error code 4002 is a specific "Ownership Conflict" flag triggered by the Emerson Sensi cloud servers. It occurs when the unique hardware ID (MAC address) of your ST55 unit is still linked to an active user account in the Sensi database. Because the ST55 is designed with a security lockout to prevent unauthorized users from hijacking a thermostat via WiFi, the system will block any new pairing attempt if the device is not explicitly "de-registered" from its previous owner.
This typically happens in three scenarios: you purchased the unit second-hand (eBay/Amazon Warehouse), you are trying to set up the device using a new email address while the old one is still active, or a previous installation attempt was interrupted, leaving the device in a "half-paired" state. You can confirm this is the issue if the thermostat is successfully in "Connect" mode (flashing WiFi icon) but the app throws the 4002 error immediately after you enter the device's unique ID or scan the QR code.
How to Fix It
To resolve Error 4002, the hardware bond must be broken at the server level. If you have access to the previous account, follow these exact steps. If you do not, skip to the "IF THAT DIDN'T WORK" section.
- Open the Sensi app on the mobile device associated with the previous account.
- From the main dashboard, tap on the specific thermostat that is causing the error.
- Tap the Settings (gear icon) located in the top right corner of the screen.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the settings menu to find the Remove Thermostat option.
- Confirm the deletion. This action sends a command to the Emerson servers to release the MAC address of the ST55.
- Wait approximately 5 to 10 minutes for the server to propagate the change.
- On your new account, restart the pairing process: Ensure the thermostat is in "Connect" mode (press the Menu button, navigate to WiFi, and select Connect).
- Follow the app prompts to add the device; the 4002 error should now be gone.
If That Didn't Work
If the previous owner is unreachable or the device was pre-owned and you cannot access the original account, try these alternatives:
- Hard Factory Reset: While the ST55 doesn't have a physical "reset" button, you can force a network clear. Go to the thermostat interface, press Menu, navigate to WiFi, and select "Forget Network." Then, power cycle the HVAC system by flipping the breaker for 30 seconds. This clears the local cache, though it may not always clear the server-side 4002 lock.
- Account Email Merge: If you accidentally created a second account, log out of the current app and log back in using the original email address used during the first installation. The 4002 error often disappears simply by using the correct legacy credentials.
- MAC Address Manual Override: If the QR code is failing, try entering the MAC address manually. This is a 12-digit alphanumeric code found on the back of the thermostat faceplate. Sometimes manual entry bypasses a glitchy QR scan that triggers a false 4002.
- Emerson Support Ticket: If the unit is locked to a stranger's account, you must contact Emerson Sensi support. You will need to provide a photo of the serial number and a copy of your purchase receipt (or a photo of the unit installed in your wall). They can manually purge the device ID from their database.
Heads Up
- 2.4GHz Requirement: Ensure your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz signal. The ST55 cannot connect to 5GHz bands, and attempting to force it can sometimes trigger generic pairing errors that look like 4002.
- C-Wire Stability: If your ST55 is running without a C-wire (using power stealing), the WiFi chip may intermittently drop. This can cause the app to think the device is offline or improperly registered.
- App Updates: Always ensure you are using the latest version of the Sensi app from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store, as server-side authentication protocols are updated frequently.
