The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-7840 often fails to detect networks because of a frequency mismatch between the printer's wireless NIC and modern "Smart" or "Dual-Band" routers. This printer is designed primarily for the 2.4GHz band. When a router uses "Band Steering" (where 2.4GHz and 5GHz share the same SSID/name), the printer often becomes "blind" to the network because it cannot negotiate the handshake with the 5GHz signal, causing the setup process to time out or return a "Network Not Found" error.
Additionally, this issue is frequently caused by outdated security protocols. If your router is set to WPA3-only mode, the WF-7840 will fail to see the network entirely because it requires WPA2 (AES) to establish a stable connection. You can confirm this by attempting to connect a different 2.4GHz-only device to the same network; if that device also fails, the issue lies in the router's security settings rather than the printer's hardware.
How to Fix It
To resolve the connection failure, follow these precise steps to manually force a connection and bypass the automatic discovery errors:
- Power cycle both the router and the printer. Unplug the power cables for 30 seconds to clear the ARP cache on the router.
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to Settings > Network Settings > Wireless LAN Setup.
- Select Wi-Fi Setup Wizard. Do not use the "Quick Connect" option, as it often fails to parse complex SSIDs.
- If your network does not appear in the list, select Manual Input. Enter your SSID (Network Name) exactly as it appears, paying strict attention to capitalization and special characters.
- When prompted for the security type, select WPA2-PSK (AES). This is the most stable protocol for the WF-7840.
- Enter your wireless password. If the printer fails again, log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and temporarily disable "Band Steering" or "Smart Connect." Create a separate SSID specifically for the 2.4GHz band (e.g., "HomeNet_2.4") and connect the printer to that specific name.
- Once the printer displays "Connection Successful," print a Network Status Sheet from the settings menu to verify the assigned IP address.
If That Didn't Work
- Use the WPS Method: If the manual setup fails, locate the WPS button on your router. On the WF-7840, go to Network Settings > Wireless LAN Setup > WPS (Push Button). Once the printer enters "Search" mode, press and hold the router's WPS button for 3-5 seconds. This bypasses the need for manual password entry and forces a handshake.
- Assign a Static IP: Wireless drops often occur because the router reassigns the IP address via DHCP. Access your router's DHCP reservation table and assign a permanent IP address to the printer's MAC address (found on the back of the printer or the network status sheet). This prevents the "Printer Offline" error after a successful setup.
- Disable IPv6: Some network configurations clash with Epson's IPv6 implementation. Go to Network Settings > Advanced Setup > TCP/IP and switch the setting from "Auto" to "Off" for IPv6, leaving only IPv4 active.
- USB-to-Wireless Bridge: Connect the printer to a computer via a USB-B cable. Run the Epson Connect software on the PC. Use the "Wireless Setup" utility within the software to "push" the Wi-Fi credentials from the computer to the printer, which is often more reliable than the onboard touch-screen interface.

- Avoid placing the printer more than 20 feet away from the router or behind large metal objects, as the WF-7840 has a relatively small internal antenna that is susceptible to signal interference.
- Ensure your router's 2.4GHz channel is set to "Auto" or a fixed channel like 1, 6, or 11. Avoid using "DFS" channels which can cause the printer to disconnect randomly.
- If you use a VPN on your computer, disable it during the initial setup process, as the Epson installer may fail to "see" the printer on the local subnet while the VPN tunnel is active.
- Keep the printer firmware updated. Epson frequently releases patches that improve the stability of the wireless module and compatibility with newer WPA2/WPA3 mixed-mode routers.
