The "chewing" and jamming behavior in the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-7840 ADF is typically caused by a loss of friction on the pickup rollers or a misalignment of the paper guides. When the rubberized surface of the pickup roller becomes glazed with paper dust (fine cellulose particles) or contaminated with oils from fingertips, it can no longer grip the top sheet of the stack. This causes the roller to slip, pulling the paper at an angle or attempting to pull multiple sheets at once, which leads to the "accordion" style jam where the paper bunches up and is crushed by the motor. Furthermore, if the paper guides are set too loosely, the sheets enter the feed path skewed, causing one edge to catch on the internal chassis while the other continues to move. If the pages are being physically shredded or "chewed," it indicates that the paper has jammed but the drive motor is continuing to rotate the rollers, grinding the paper against the plastic feed ribs. You can confirm this by checking the rollers for a shiny, smooth appearance—healthy rollers should have a matte, tacky texture.
How to Fix It
To resolve the feeding issues and restore grip to the ADF, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the printer and unplug the power cable to prevent any electrical shorts during cleaning.
- Lift the ADF cover (the plastic flap on top of the document feeder). Locate the primary pickup roller—the long, grey/white rubber cylinder—and the smaller rubber separation pad located directly opposite it.
- Dampen a high-quality, lint-free microfiber cloth with distilled water. Do not use isopropyl alcohol, as it can dry out and crack the rubber over time, making the problem permanent.
- Firmly press the cloth against the rubber roller and rotate the roller manually with your finger to ensure you clean the entire circumference. Pay special attention to the center of the roller where the most pressure is applied.
- Wipe the separation pad (the small rubber strip) thoroughly to remove any accumulated paper debris.
- Allow the rollers to air-dry for at least 10 minutes. If you use the printer while the rollers are damp, the paper will slip and potentially cause a wet-paper jam.
- Adjust the paper guides on the ADF tray. Slide them until they are snug against the edges of your paper stack, but not so tight that the paper bows or arches.
- Load a small stack of 20-sheet 20lb bond paper and perform a test scan to verify the grip.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect for Foreign Objects: Use a bright flashlight to look deep into the ADF feed slot. Small staples, paper clips, or fragments of torn paper from previous jams often lodge themselves in the feed path. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to carefully remove any debris that may be snagging the paper.
- Check Paper Weight and Type: The WF-7840 ADF is designed for standard office paper. If you are using heavy cardstock, labels, or very thin thermal receipts, the rollers will struggle to grip. Try a different brand of paper or a different weight (e.g., switching from 24lb to 20lb paper) to see if the issue persists.
- Replace the Pickup Roller Kit: If the rubber is physically cracked or has completely lost its texture despite cleaning, the rollers are worn out. You will need to replace the ADF roller assembly. This involves removing the top housing screws and swapping the roller shaft.
- Reset the ADF Sensor: Occasionally, a piece of dust can block the optical sensor that detects paper passage. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the sensor path located just before the paper enters the scanning glass.

- Avoid Chemical Cleaners: Never use glass cleaner or harsh detergents on the rollers; these leave a chemical residue that makes the rubber slippery and accelerates degradation.
- Fan Your Paper: Before loading a stack into the ADF, "fan" the pages to break any static cling. Static electricity is a primary cause of multiple-page pulls in wide-format printers.
- Limit Stack Height: Even though the tray has a high capacity, avoid filling it to the absolute brim. Keeping the stack at 75% capacity reduces the vertical pressure on the pickup roller and prevents skewed feeds.
- Regular Maintenance: Clean the rollers every 1,000 to 2,000 scans to prevent the buildup of paper dust that leads to these jams.
