Diagnosis
The loud rattling or buzzing noise experienced in the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is almost always a result of mechanical resonance or physical interference within the blower assembly. Because the noise intensifies at higher fan speeds, it indicates that the centrifugal fan is either vibrating against its housing or striking a foreign object. At high RPMs, even a millimeter of displacement in the filter or a loose piece of plastic can create a high-frequency vibration that resonates through the plastic chassis, sounding like a loud buzz. Another common cause is a "mis-seated" filter. If the HEPA or Pre-filter is not pushed firmly into the guide rails, the airflow creates a pressure vacuum that pulls the filter slightly inward. This causes the edge of the filter frame to rub against the spinning fan blades or the motor housing. You can confirm this by switching the unit to "Low" speed; if the noise disappears or becomes a faint hum, the issue is speed-dependent vibration. If the noise persists at all speeds, you likely have a foreign object (like a piece of packing foam or a stray coin) lodged in the fan cage.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to isolate and eliminate the noise source:
- Power down the unit completely and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent accidental fan activation.
- Open the front magnetic grille by pulling the tab on the right side.
- Remove the Pre-filter (the thin, washable mesh) and the HEPA filter. Inspect the filter frames for any warping or bends. If the frame is bowed, it will not sit flush and will cause the fan to rattle.
- Using a bright flashlight, look deep into the blower chamber. Check for any leftover shipping materials, plastic wrap, or debris that may have been sucked into the intake.
- Reach into the chamber and gently rotate the fan blades by hand to see if they catch on anything or feel "off-center."
- Re-insert the HEPA filter. Instead of just sliding it in, apply firm pressure to all four corners of the filter frame to ensure it is locked into the guide rails and perfectly flush against the back wall.
- Re-attach the Pre-filter, ensuring it is snapped securely into the clips.
- Close the front grille and plug the unit back in. Test the fan speeds incrementally from Low to Turbo to verify the noise is gone.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Chassis Resonance: Sometimes the noise isn't the fan, but the plastic casing vibrating against the floor. Move the unit to a hard, level surface. If it is on a thick rug, the vibration can amplify. Try placing a thin rubber mat under the feet to dampen the resonance.
- Inspect the Fan Motor Bearings: If the rattling sounds more like a metallic grinding, the motor bearings may have worn out or become contaminated. This is rare for the AP-1512HH but happens if the unit is used in extremely humid environments. This requires a professional motor replacement as the blower assembly is sealed.
- Verify Filter Authenticity: If you are using third-party "generic" replacement filters, they are often 2-3mm off in size. This slight discrepancy allows the filter to vibrate at high speeds. Switch back to an OEM Coway filter to see if the fit is tighter and the noise ceases.
- Deep Clean the Blower Wheel: Over several years, dust can accumulate unevenly on the fan blades, creating an imbalance (similar to a car tire needing balancing). Use a can of compressed air to blow out the fan blades from the top vent to remove heavy dust clumps.

- Never operate the unit without the filters installed; this allows dust to coat the fan blades, leading to imbalance and eventual motor failure.
- When cleaning the Pre-filter, ensure it is 100% dry before re-inserting. Damp filters can warp or cause the fan to "slap" the wet material, creating a rhythmic thumping sound.
- Avoid placing the unit directly against a wall or curtain. The AP-1512HH requires at least 12-18 inches of clearance for intake; restricted airflow can cause the motor to overwork and vibrate.
- Check your filter replacement light every 6 months. A heavily clogged filter increases the static pressure on the fan, which can lead to increased noise levels at high speeds.
