the blade on my greenworks mower seems wobbly or loose, is that normal?

Diagnosis

A wobbly or loose blade on your Greenworks 40V mower is not normal and is a serious safety hazard. This condition almost always indicates that the central blade adapter bolt has worked loose, compromising the secure connection between the blade and the motor spindle. Less commonly, it can mean the blade itself is bent or the blade adapter (the star-shaped piece that holds the blade) or the motor spindle is damaged.

How to Fix It

You must inspect and secure the blade immediately. Follow these steps precisely:

1. Remove the battery completely to ensure the mower cannot start.
2. Carefully tip the mower onto its side, with the side containing the control handle and battery tray facing up. This prevents oil or debris from entering the motor housing.
3. Insert a sturdy block of wood between the blade and the mower deck to lock the blade in place and prevent it from spinning.
4. Using the correct size wrench (typically a 15mm or 9/16" socket/wrench for Greenworks models), check the large central bolt in the blade adapter. Turn it clockwise to tighten it firmly. Do not over-torque.

If That Didn't Work

If the bolt was already tight or tightening it does not eliminate the wobble, the issue is physical damage. With the mower safely tipped and the battery out, visually inspect the blade for bends or cracks. Spin it slowly to check for warping. If the blade is straight, the wobble originates from a damaged blade adapter or a bent motor spindle. In either case, the damaged component must be replaced with a genuine Greenworks part before the mower is used again.
