Diagnosis
This failure is typically caused by one of two issues: a mechanical failure of the tactile switch on the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or, more commonly, "conductive bridging" caused by coffee residue and moisture. Because the VertuoPlus is an open-top design, steam and coffee splashes frequently migrate under the plastic button housing. Over time, these organic residues create a conductive film that tricks the machine into thinking the button is permanently pressed or, conversely, prevents the electrical signal from triggering the brew cycle entirely. If the machine's power light is on but the button does not "click" or trigger any response, the physical micro-switch has likely failed or is obstructed by a hardened sugar crust from spilled coffee. To confirm this, check if the machine responds to a factory reset sequence (if the button allows) or if the light flashes when you attempt to press it. If there is no light change and no mechanical "click" feel, the switch is physically compromised or shorted.
How to Fix It
To resolve a non-responsive button, you must first clear any internal debris and attempt a hard power cycle to reset the logic board. Follow these exact steps:
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and remove the water tank and the capsule container to reduce the machine's weight.
- Using a can of compressed air (standard electronics duster), spray directly into the narrow gap around the perimeter of the brew button. Use short, high-pressure bursts to blow out any dried coffee grounds or moisture trapped between the plastic cap and the internal switch.
- Dampen a cotton swab with 90% isopropyl alcohol. Gently rub the edges of the button to dissolve any sticky residue that may be pinning the button in a "down" position.
- Tilt the machine forward at a 45-degree angle over a sink. Gently tap the top of the housing with the palm of your hand to dislodge any loose debris from the switch assembly.
- Leave the machine unplugged for exactly 10 minutes to allow any residual capacitors on the motherboard to discharge completely.
- Plug the machine back in and perform a "Hard Reset": Press and hold the brew button for 5 seconds. If the light flashes orange or white, the connection has been restored.
If That Didn't Work
If the button remains unresponsive, the issue is deeper than surface debris:
- Check the Power Cord Seating: Ensure the power cable is pushed fully into the rear of the machine. On some VertuoPlus models, the cord can wiggle loose just enough to power the LED lights but not enough to provide the amperage required to trigger the pump and heater via the button press.
- Inspect the Capsule Lock: The VertuoPlus has a safety interlock. If the machine does not detect that the head is fully locked and the lever is down, the button is programmed to remain unresponsive. Open the head, ensure no capsule fragments are stuck in the locking mechanism, and slam the lever down firmly.
- Test for "Ghost Pressing": If the button feels "mushy" and doesn't click, the internal plastic stem has likely snapped. In this case, the only fix is to replace the top housing assembly (Part #60111125 or equivalent depending on the specific De'Longhi sub-model), as the switches are soldered directly to the main board.
- Water Tank Sensor Trip: If the float in the water tank is stuck at the bottom, some versions of the VertuoPlus firmware will disable the brew button to prevent the pump from running dry. Shake the water tank to ensure the magnetic float is moving freely.
Heads Up
- Avoid using water or liquid cleaners directly on the button; always use isopropyl alcohol as it evaporates quickly and won't cause further short-circuiting.
- Never use a needle or thin metal probe to "poke" the button edges, as you can easily puncture the silicone membrane, allowing coffee to leak directly onto the PCB.
- To prevent this in the future, wipe the top of the machine after every brew session to ensure no coffee droplets seep into the button housing.
- If you notice the brew button sticking, do not force it; this often snaps the delicate tactile switch on the circuit board, turning a simple cleaning job into a total motherboard replacement.
