Diagnosis
The solid orange descaling light on the Nespresso VertuoPlus by De'Longhi indicates that the internal maintenance counter has not been reset. This is not a sensor that detects actual limescale buildup; rather, it is a programmed timer based on the number of capsules brewed. If the light remains orange after a cycle, the machine's logic board believes the process was interrupted or incomplete, meaning the "exit" trigger for the descaling mode was never registered. This most commonly happens because of a "dry run" or an air lock in the pump. If the water tank ran dry for even a second during the rinse phase, or if the machine was turned off prematurely, the software fails to register the completion of the cycle. To confirm this, check if the machine is still producing full-pressure streams; if the flow is weak but the light is still orange, you likely have a partial blockage preventing the machine from completing the required volume of water flow necessary to trip the reset switch.
How to Fix It
To force the machine to reset the orange light, you must execute the full sequence without any interruptions. Ensure there is no capsule in the machine and the lever is locked.
- Preparation: Empty the water tank and discard any used capsules. Fill the tank with 500ml of warm water mixed with one sachet of Nespresso descaling solution (or a solution of 2 tablespoons of citric acid dissolved in 1 liter of water).
- Enter Descaling Mode: With the machine plugged in and turned on, press the button on the top of the machine rapidly three times within two seconds. The light will begin to blink orange.
- Initiate the Cycle: Place a large container (at least 1 liter) under the coffee outlet. Press the button once. The machine will begin pumping the solution through the head. This process takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Do not touch the machine or open the lever during this time.
- The Rinse Phase: Once the tank is empty, the machine will stop. This is the critical step where most users fail. You must rinse the system. Fill the water tank to the maximum line with fresh, clean drinking water.
- Complete the Reset: Place the container back under the spout and press the button once more. The machine will run the rinse cycle. The orange light will only turn off once the machine has processed a specific volume of clean water and the internal pump registers a complete cycle.
- Exit: Once the rinse is finished, the machine will stop automatically, and the light should return to a steady white or turn off completely.
If That Didn't Work
- The Hard Reset: Unplug the machine from the wall outlet for exactly 10 minutes. This clears the temporary cache of the control board. Plug it back in and immediately attempt the "three-click" sequence again. Sometimes the board needs a power cycle to recognize the state change from "descaling" to "ready."
- Clear the Air Lock: If the machine is humming but no water is coming out during the rinse, you have an air bubble in the pump. Fill the water tank, then gently lift the tank up and down several times while the pump is running to force water into the intake valve. Once the flow resumes, the cycle can complete and reset the light.
- Manual Override: If the light is still orange, try running three standard "large" brew cycles using only water (no capsule). This can sometimes trick the machine into realizing the lines are clear and the volume requirements for the descaling process have been met.
- Check the Water Level Sensor: Ensure the float in the water tank is moving freely. If the float is stuck at the bottom, the machine thinks it is out of water and will abort the descaling sequence prematurely, leaving the orange light active.
Heads Up
- Avoid Vinegar: Never use white vinegar for descaling the VertuoPlus. The acetic acid in vinegar can erode the internal rubber gaskets and seals, leading to leaks in the brew head that are impossible to fix without replacing the entire chassis.
- Frequency: Perform this process every 3 months or every 300 capsules. Ignoring the orange light for too long can lead to a permanent pump failure due to calcium crystallization.
- Drip Tray Maintenance: While descaling, ensure the drip tray is empty. If the tray overflows during the rinse cycle, water can seep into the base of the machine and trigger a short circuit on the main PCB.
- Water Quality: Using filtered water instead of hard tap water will significantly extend the time between descaling alerts and prevent the "solid orange" glitch from occurring due to scale-clogged valves.
