the doors on my side by side aren't aligned, the freezer door sticks out further than the fridge door

— asked by Jordan

Quick answer: The refrigerator is not level side-to-side, or the door hinges need adjustment. An unlevel unit causes doors to swing open or not seal correctly.

Diagnosis

The refrigerator is not level side-to-side, or the door hinges need adjustment. An unlevel unit causes doors to swing open or not seal correctly.

How to Fix It

Use a carpenter's level on the top of the cabinet, front to back and side to side. Adjust the leveling legs at the front bottom corners. Turn the legs clockwise to raise that side, counter-clockwise to lower. The refrigerator must tilt slightly backwards (1/4 inch higher in front) so doors close automatically. For hinge adjustment: Open the door. Remove the plastic cap covering the top hinge. Loosen (do not remove) the hinge mounting screws with a hex key. Align the door, then retighten the screws.

If That Didn't Work

The door may be warped or the gasket may be improperly seated. Check the magnetic door gasket for gaps by closing the door on a dollar bill; it should have consistent resistance when pulled. Replace the gasket if torn or deformed.

Heads Up

Adjust the hinges with the refrigerator empty. The weight of food can affect alignment. Make small, incremental adjustments and test the door seal after each one.
