Diagnosis
The production of "hollow" or "shell" ice cubes in the Silonn SLIM01 is almost always a symptom of an incomplete water-fill cycle. In this model, the pump is responsible for lifting water from the reservoir into the freezing pins. When the pump fails to deliver the precise volume of water required to fill the mold before the freezing timer kicks in, only a thin layer of ice forms around the exterior of the pin, leaving a void in the center. This is typically caused by air locks in the internal tubing or a failure in the water-sensing mechanism. If the machine "thinks" it has filled the mold but hasn't actually moved enough liquid, it will proceed to the freezing stage prematurely. This can be triggered by using distilled water (which lacks the mineral conductivity some sensors rely on) or by a buildup of calcium carbonate (scale) inside the narrow pump intake, which restricts flow rate just enough to prevent a full fill without triggering a "Low Water" alert.
How to Fix It
To restore full cube production, you must clear the pump line and reset the sensor calibration. Follow these exact steps:
- Power down the unit and unplug it from the wall for at least 10 minutes to allow any trapped ice crystals in the pump housing to melt.
- Empty the water reservoir completely. Fill it with a mixture of 2 cups of warm white vinegar and 4 cups of filtered water.
- Plug the unit back in and run one full cycle with the vinegar solution. This breaks down the mineral scale that narrows the internal diameter of the water tubes.
- Drain the reservoir and run a "Clean" cycle if your specific SLIM01 revision has the dedicated button; otherwise, run two cycles of plain tap water to flush the vinegar.
- Ensure the unit is on a perfectly level surface. Use a bubble level if possible. If the unit tilts even 2-3 degrees, the water will pool on one side of the mold, causing hollow cubes on the elevated side.
- Reset the machine by holding the Power button for 5 seconds after the water is refilled to the "MAX" line.
If That Didn't Work
- Switch Water Types: If you are using distilled or reverse osmosis (RO) water, stop immediately. These waters are too "pure" and can cause the pump to cavitate or the sensors to misread the water level. Switch to standard bottled spring water or tap water for 5 cycles to see if the cube density improves.
- Check the Intake Filter: Inspect the bottom of the water reservoir for any slime or debris buildup. Use a soft brush to clean the intake area where the pump draws water; any obstruction here reduces the flow rate, leading to under-filled molds.
- Ambient Temperature Adjustment: If the machine is placed in a very cold room (below 60°F/15°C), the water may begin freezing the moment it hits the mold, blocking the rest of the water from filling the center. Move the unit to a warmer area of the kitchen to ensure the fill cycle completes before the flash-freeze begins.
- Hard Reset of the Thermostat: Unplug the unit and leave it off for 24 hours. This allows the evaporator plate to completely defrost. Sometimes a thin layer of "invisible" ice builds up on the mold surface, preventing water from adhering and filling the mold correctly.

- Avoid using "heavy" mineral water or high-sodium water, as this will accelerate the scaling process and lead to pump failure within 6 months.
- Never fill the reservoir past the MAX line; overfilling can cause water to leak into the internal electronics, leading to erratic pump behavior.
- Perform a vinegar descale every 30 days if you live in a hard-water area to maintain the flow rate of the internal pump.
- Ensure there is at least 6 inches of open air space around the side vents. If the unit overheats, the refrigeration cycle becomes inefficient, which can paradoxically affect how the water freezes in the mold.
