The "plasticky" or chemical taste in the Euhomy IM-01 typically stems from two distinct sources: residual manufacturing lubricants used on the evaporator pins and the off-gassing of the food-grade plastics and silicone tubing during the initial break-in period. Because the IM-01 uses a closed-loop water system, these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and factory residues cling to the interior walls of the reservoir and the small-diameter tubing that feeds the ice tray. If you have already used a cleaning solution, the taste may be caused by "chemical clinging," where the surfactants in the cleaner bond to the plastic surfaces. This is especially common if the machine was not fully drained between the cleaning cycle and the first ice run. You can confirm this by smelling the water remaining in the reservoir after a cycle; if it smells like a swimming pool or a new car, the residue is trapped in the internal plumbing and not just the removable bucket.
How to Fix It
To fully neutralize the taste, you must perform a deep chemical purge and a mechanical flush. Follow these exact steps:
- Drain the reservoir completely by removing the silicone drainage plug located at the rear of the unit. Let it sit for 10 minutes to ensure all stagnant water is gone.
- Fill the reservoir with 1.5 liters of distilled water mixed with 1 cup (approx. 240ml) of concentrated lemon juice or a 5% citric acid solution. Do not use white vinegar, as the acetic acid smell can be harder to remove than the plastic taste.
- Run the machine on the "Fast" setting for three complete ice-making cycles. This forces the citric acid through the pump and over the evaporator pins where the factory oils reside.
- Once the third batch of ice is complete, dump the ice and the lemon solution.
- Wipe the interior of the ice bucket and the rim of the reservoir with a microfiber cloth dipped in warm water to remove any surface film.
- Refill the reservoir with filtered water (preferably from a reverse osmosis system or a Brita filter) to avoid adding new minerals that can trap odors.
- Run 3 to 5 more full cycles. You must discard every single batch of ice produced during this phase. Do not consume the ice until the "plasticky" scent is completely gone from the air venting at the top of the machine.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a "Deep Soak": Fill the reservoir with a mixture of warm water and a tablespoon of baking soda. Let the machine sit powered off for 12 hours. The baking soda acts as a pH neutralizer that pulls odors out of the silicone tubing. Drain and rinse thoroughly before restarting.
- Check the Water Source: If you are using tap water, the IM-01's cooling process can concentrate chlorine or minerals, which tastes like chemicals. Switch to bottled distilled water for 48 hours to determine if the issue is the machine or your local water supply.
- Inspect the Air Filter/Vent: The IM-01 vents heat from the sides. If the machine is placed in a tight cabinet, the plastic casing can overheat and off-gas, which then settles on the ice. Move the unit to an open-air countertop with at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides.
- Replace the Reservoir: If the taste persists after 10 cycles, there may be a manufacturing defect in the plastic mold of your specific unit (plastic leaching). Contact the manufacturer for a replacement water tank, as this is a separate component from the cooling engine.
Heads Up
- Never use dish soap or bleach inside the reservoir; these chemicals can degrade the seals and leave a permanent bitter taste that is nearly impossible to remove.
- Always use filtered water to prevent calcium buildup on the evaporator pins, which can trap odors and lead to "cloudy" tasting ice.
- Run a maintenance rinse every 2 weeks using a diluted citric acid solution to keep the internal lines fresh.
- Avoid leaving ice in the bucket for more than 24 hours. Because the IM-01 is not a freezer, the ice melts and re-freezes, which concentrates any remaining odors in the water.
