Because ice is porous and acts like a sponge for ambient odors, it readily absorbs volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the surrounding air. If the unit is placed in a kitchen with strong cooking smells or near a freezer containing pungent foods, the ice will take on those flavors. This is exacerbated by the lack of a sealed chamber; the ice bin is open to the air, allowing odors to settle directly onto the cubes. Additionally, "plastic" tastes are common in new units due to the off-gassing of the food-grade plastics used in the reservoir and tubing. Over time, a biofilm or mineral scale can build up inside the internal pumps and the evaporator plate. This buildup traps old water and organic matter, which decomposes and creates a stale, chemical-like taste that persists even if you use filtered water in the tank.

How to Fix It

To eliminate odors and plastic tastes, you must perform a deep chemical flush and a physical sanitization of the reservoir.

1. Empty the water reservoir completely and wipe the interior walls with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove any surface slime.
2. Prepare a descaling solution: Mix 2 tablespoons of citric acid powder with 1 quart of warm distilled water. Alternatively, use a commercial descaler specifically rated for food-service equipment.
3. Pour the solution into the reservoir. Press the "Clean" button (if your specific sub-model has the dedicated light) or manually initiate the cleaning cycle by filling the tank and letting the machine run for 2 hours.
4. Once the cycle finishes, drain the reservoir completely. Use a clean sponge to scrub the corners of the tank where biofilm typically accumulates.

If That Didn't Work

• Switch to distilled water exclusively for two weeks. If the taste disappears, your tap water contains chlorine or sulfur that reacts with the plastic tubing of the ICEB26AQ, creating a chemical taste. Using distilled water removes these reactive minerals.
• Relocate the unit to a different room or a well-ventilated area. If the ice tastes like "freezer food," the unit is absorbing smells from your kitchen. Moving it away from the stove or the main refrigerator can stop the cross-contamination of odors.
• Deep clean the air intake vents. Dust and grease can accumulate in the cooling fans at the back of the unit. When the fans blow, they push these odors over the ice bin. Use a vacuum or compressed air to clear the vents and wipe the grill with a degreasing agent.
