The "main brush blocked" error on the Dreame L40 Ultra is often a "phantom" trigger caused by excessive friction at the brush end-caps rather than a visible obstruction in the bristles. The L40 Ultra uses a high-torque motor with a sensitive current-monitoring system; if the motor detects a spike in electrical resistance—even for a fraction of a second—it triggers a safety shutdown to prevent the motor from burning out. This is frequently caused by "invisible" hair wraps: thin strands of hair or sewing thread that have migrated past the brush rollers and wound tightly around the plastic bearing housings at the ends of the brush roll. Because these wraps are compressed against the chassis, they don't look like a "clog" when you glance at the brush, but they create enough drag to trip the sensor. Another common cause is a buildup of fine dust or grit inside the brush module's drive gear, which increases the torque required to spin the brush. If the robot stops every few minutes, it indicates that the friction is right on the threshold of the error limit, and any slight increase in carpet pile or debris load pushes it over the edge.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep clean of the drive assembly, not just the bristles.
- Power down the L40 Ultra completely using the physical switch.
- Flip the robot over and press the release tabs on the main brush cover. Lift the cover and remove the brush roll entirely.
- Inspect the two end-caps of the brush roll. Use a pair of precision tweezers or a seam ripper to peel back the plastic edges of the end-caps. You will likely find a dense, felt-like ring of hair wound around the axle. Remove every single strand until the axle spins freely with zero resistance.
- Inspect the brush chamber (the cavity where the brush sits). Use a can of compressed air or a vacuum hose to clear out the corners, specifically focusing on the drive gear on the left side and the idling bearing on the right.
- Check the brush roll for any warping or "bloating" of the bristles. If the brush is deformed, it will rub against the plastic housing, triggering the error.
- Reinsert the brush, ensuring it clicks firmly into the drive gear. Replace the cover and run a "Spot Clean" on a hard floor to verify the error is gone.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Brush Roll: If you have used the same brush for more than 3-6 months, the internal bearings may have worn down, causing the brush to wobble.
