Diagnosis
The high-pitched whining noise emanating from the motor assembly of the Samsung Jet 90 Complete is typically caused by one of two issues: aerodynamic turbulence from a partial blockage or mechanical friction within the high-speed brushless motor bearings. When air cannot flow freely through the filtration system, it creates a "whistle" effect as it is forced through tiny gaps at extremely high velocities, which sounds like a mechanical scream. Alternatively, if the sound persists even when the vacuum is empty, it is likely that microscopic debris or fine dust has bypassed the pre-filter and entered the motor housing. This debris settles on the impeller blades, causing an imbalance that creates a high-frequency vibration. In severe cases, the lubricant in the motor bearings has dried out or been contaminated, leading to metal-on-metal friction that manifests as a piercing whine, especially when switching from "Medium" to "Max" suction mode.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep cleaning of the motor intake and inspect the impeller. You will need a Torx T10 screwdriver and a pair of fine-point tweezers.
- Power down the unit completely and remove the battery pack by pressing the release button and sliding the battery out of the chassis.
- Locate the four Torx T10 screws securing the upper motor housing cover. These are typically recessed; ensure the screwdriver is seated fully to avoid stripping the heads.
- Carefully lift the motor cover straight up. Be mindful of the plastic clips on the rear edge of the housing; gently pry them outward to avoid snapping the tabs.
- Inspect the small centrifugal fan intake located at the top of the motor assembly. Look for tightly wound hair, sewing thread, or clumps of fine dust that have bypassed the HEPA filter.
- Use the fine-point tweezers to extract any debris from the fan blades. Do not use compressed air at high pressure, as this can push debris deeper into the motor bearings.
- Inspect the rubber gaskets around the motor seal. If they are pinched or skewed, they will cause air leaks that generate a high-pitched whistling sound. Reseat the gaskets by pressing them firmly into their grooves.
- Reassemble the housing, ensuring the cover snaps fully into place before tightening the Torx screws to avoid warping the plastic.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the HEPA Filter: A saturated or clogged HEPA filter creates immense backpressure. This forces the motor to work harder and can cause the air to "scream" as it tries to pass through the clogged material. Replace the filter with a genuine Samsung part if it appears grey or brown.
- Check the Cyclone Assembly: Remove the dustbin and inspect the cyclone mesh. If a small object (like a pebble or piece of plastic) is lodged in the cyclone, it can create a resonant frequency that sounds like it is coming from the motor. Clear the cyclone using a long pipe cleaner.
- Inspect the Battery Terminals: In rare cases, an unstable power draw from a failing battery cell can cause the motor controller to oscillate, creating an electronic whine. Try a fully charged second battery to see if the noise persists.
- Motor Bearing Replacement: If the whine is a grinding metallic sound, the internal bearings have failed. Because the Jet 90 motor is a sealed unit, the entire motor assembly must be replaced. This requires swapping the motor module with a certified replacement part.

- Never operate the vacuum on "Max" mode for extended periods if you notice the motor housing feeling hot to the touch; this accelerates bearing wear and increases the likelihood of the whining noise.
- Wash the washable pre-filter every 30 days and ensure it is 100% dry (usually 24 hours) before reinsertion. A damp filter restricts airflow and puts excessive strain on the motor.
- Avoid vacuuming extremely fine powders (like drywall dust or fireplace ash) without a specialized attachment, as these particles are small enough to penetrate the motor seals and cause permanent bearing damage.
- Check the brush roll for tangles weekly; a jammed brush roll forces the motor to ramp up RPMs to maintain suction, which can trigger the high-pitched whine.
