washer is making a loud grinding or scraping noise during the spin cycle, sounds awful.

— asked by Taylor

DIAGNOSIS A foreign object (like a coin, bra wire, or key) is trapped between the stainless steel wash basket and the plastic outer tub, scraping during the spin.

FIX Tip the washer back (get help, it's heavy) and look through the drain pump filter access door on the lower front. Remove the filter cap (have a towel ready for water), reach in to feel for debris, and pull it out.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The noise could be from worn drive pulley bearings or a failing transmission. Listen if the noise is worst at high speed spin—that points to internal mechanical wear needing professional repair.

HEADS UP Always check pockets thoroughly. Small metal objects are the most common cause of spin noise and can eventually puncture the inner basket.
