When you plug the device into a USB-C power source, the internal charging circuit prioritizes battery replenishment over the immediate power draw of the printing mechanism. Because thermal printing requires a significant spike in current to heat the elements, the device may struggle to pull enough amperage from the charging cable alone to sustain a print job while simultaneously pushing current into the battery cells. This creates a power instability issue. If the battery is critically low, the device may enter a "protection mode" where it refuses to initiate a print to prevent the voltage from dropping below a threshold that could damage the motherboard. If you attempt to print while charging, you may experience "faded" prints, intermittent connectivity drops with the NIIMBOT app, or the device may spontaneously reboot mid-label. You can confirm this by noticing if the print quality degrades specifically when the charging cable is inserted compared to when it is running on a full battery.
How to Fix It
To ensure the longevity of your B1 and the quality of your labels, follow this specific power management workflow:
- Connect the NIIMBOT B1 to a 5V/2A power adapter using the original USB-C cable. Avoid using high-wattage laptop "Fast Chargers" (PD chargers), as these can sometimes confuse the B1's handshake protocol and slow down charging.
- Observe the LED indicator on the device. Allow the device to charge until the indicator light signals a full charge (usually indicated by a steady light or the light turning off, depending on the firmware version).
- Disconnect the USB-C cable from the device entirely before opening the NIIMBOT app on your smartphone.
- Power on the B1 and pair it via Bluetooth.
- Execute your print job. By running on battery power, the print head receives a consistent, dedicated current, ensuring the thermal elements reach the precise temperature required for deep black ink saturation.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Power Brick: If the device refuses to turn on even while plugged in, your USB wall adapter may be underpowered. Ensure you are using a brick rated for at least 2 Amps. A standard computer USB 2.0 port often provides only 0.5A, which is insufficient to both charge the battery and power the B1's logic board simultaneously.
- Perform a Hard Reset: If the B1 is stuck in a charging loop or won't print despite being plugged in, hold the power button for 10-15 seconds to force a hardware reset. This clears the temporary cache in the power management IC.
- Inspect the USB-C Port: Use a non-conductive toothpick or compressed air to clean the USB-C port on the B1. Lint or debris in the port can prevent the pins from making full contact, leading to "trickle charging" that isn't enough to support the device's operational needs.
- Update Firmware: Open the NIIMBOT app, go to settings, and check for firmware updates. Some early versions of the B1 had inefficient power management profiles that were improved in later software releases to better handle low-battery states.

- Avoid Deep Discharge: Never let your B1 battery drop to 0%. Lithium batteries in small thermal printers degrade quickly if fully depleted; try to plug it in once the battery hits 20%.
- Heat Warning: Thermal printing generates heat, and charging generates heat. Using the device while charging increases the internal temperature of the chassis, which can lead to premature adhesive failure on the labels inside the machine.
- Cable Quality: Only use high-quality USB-C cables. Cheap, thin cables have higher internal resistance, which further restricts the current flow and increases the likelihood of the device shutting down during a print.
- Storage: If you aren't using the B1 for several weeks, store it with a 50-70% charge. Storing it completely empty can "brick" the battery, making it unable to hold a charge in the future.
