Diagnosis
This issue is typically caused by a failure of the internal ratcheting mechanism or a misalignment of the three-jaw planetary gear system within the 10mm keyless chuck. In the DEKOPRO 8V model, the chuck relies on a friction-lock system; if the internal springs have weakened or if metal shavings have entered the jaw tracks, the sleeve will spin freely without actually compressing the jaws around the drill bit shank. This results in "slipping," where the bit is held loosely and ejects as soon as torque is applied. Another common cause is the use of oversized or improperly shaped bits. If you are using a hex-shank bit that is slightly out of spec or has a worn-down flat, the jaws cannot achieve a 360-degree grip. You can confirm this by inserting a standard 1/4" round shank bit and attempting to tighten; if the chuck still spins without resistance, the internal threading of the sleeve has stripped or the locking pawls are stuck in the "open" position.
How to Fix It
To restore the gripping power of your DEKOPRO 8V drill, follow this precise recalibration and cleaning sequence:
- Power down the unit completely and slide the 8V battery pack out of the base to ensure there is no accidental trigger activation.
- Inspect the jaw opening. Use a compressed air can or a thin needle to clear any sawdust, drywall dust, or metal filings from the three jaw slots. Even a small amount of debris can prevent the jaws from closing fully.
- Insert a standard 1/4" drill bit. Ensure the bit is pushed all the way to the back of the chuck; if there is a gap between the bit shoulder and the chuck face, the jaws will not lock.
- Grip the outer sleeve firmly. Rotate it clockwise. If it feels "loose," apply firm inward pressure toward the drill body while rotating. This helps reseat the internal locking pawls.
- Once the bit feels snug, continue to rotate the sleeve clockwise with a "snap" motion. Many keyless chucks have a locking click that engages a secondary hold.
- Test the grip by attempting to pull the bit out by hand. If it slides out with minimal effort, the chuck is not engaging the shank.
If That Didn't Work
- Lubricate the Internal Gears: Apply a small drop of light machine oil or WD-40 Specialist Penetrant into the gaps between the jaws. Rotate the chuck open and closed several times manually to distribute the lubricant. This often frees up stuck ratchets that are preventing the sleeve from tightening.
- The "Impact Reset": Gently tap the side of the chuck housing with a rubber mallet or the handle of a screwdriver. This can sometimes jar a misaligned jaw back into its track, allowing the sleeve to engage the threading again.
- Check for Bit Compatibility: Switch from a hex-shank bit to a round-shank bit. If the round bit holds but the hex bit slips, the issue is with the bit's tolerances, not the drill. Ensure you are using high-carbon steel bits that match the 10mm chuck specifications.
- Mechanical Replacement: If the sleeve continues to spin without any resistance, the internal plastic or soft-metal threads are stripped. Because the 8V model is a sealed unit, the entire chuck assembly must be replaced. Check if your unit is still under the DEKOPRO limited warranty for a replacement tool.
Heads Up
- Avoid over-tightening the chuck with pliers or external tools; this can strip the internal gears and permanently ruin the keyless mechanism.
- Always wipe your drill bits clean of oil or grease before insertion, as lubricants on the shank significantly increase the likelihood of the bit slipping during high-torque applications.
- Periodically check the alignment of the jaws. If one jaw is closing slower than the others, it indicates a bent internal spindle which can lead to "bit walk" (the bit sliding off-center during drilling).
- Never use the drill to "force" a bit into the chuck; if it doesn't slide in easily, check for debris in the throat of the chuck first.
