Diagnosis
It is normal for a Lithium-ion battery to feel slightly warm to the touch during a charge cycle due to internal chemical resistance. However, if the battery is "hot"—meaning it is uncomfortable to hold, smells of ozone/plastic, or causes the charger to shut off—this indicates a failure in the thermal management system, a short circuit within the cells, or an incompatible power source. Excessive heat is a precursor to thermal runaway and poses a significant fire risk.
How to Fix It
To ensure safe charging of your DEKOPRO 8V system, follow these steps:
- Verify the Charger: Ensure you are using the official DEKOPRO charger specifically rated for this 8V system. Using a third-party adapter or a charger with a higher voltage/amperage than specified can overheat the cells.
- Optimize Environment: Charge the battery on a hard, flat, non-flammable surface. Avoid charging on carpets, beds, or inside enclosed drawers where heat cannot dissipate.
- Temperature Control: Only charge the battery when the ambient temperature is between 5°C (41°F) and 40°C (104°F). If the battery was just used for heavy drilling, let it cool down for 15-30 minutes before plugging it in.
If That Didn't Work
If the battery continues to overheat despite using the correct charger and environment:
- Inspect for Damage: Check the battery casing for swelling, cracks, or leaking fluid. Any physical deformation indicates an internal cell failure.
- Test Another Pack: If you have a second battery, test it with the same charger. If only one battery overheats, the battery pack is defective. If both overheat, the charger is faulty.
- Safe Disposal: Do not attempt to open or repair the battery pack. Discard defective batteries at a certified e-waste or battery recycling center.

Never leave a charging battery unattended for extended periods. If you notice the battery casing expanding or emitting smoke, disconnect the power immediately (if safe to do so) and move the device to an outdoor area away from flammable materials.
