Diagnosis
The combination of a grinding noise and a burning smell in a DEKOPRO 8V cordless drill typically indicates a mechanical failure in the planetary gear system or a critical overload of the DC motor. The grinding sound is caused by stripped gear teeth or a displaced gear that is slipping under load, creating metal-on-metal friction. The burning smell is the result of the motor windings overheating or the carbon brushes arcing excessively as the motor struggles to turn a jammed or slipping drivetrain. This most commonly occurs when the tool is operated in Speed 2 (High Speed/Low Torque) while attempting to drive large fasteners or drill into dense hardwoods. When the motor encounters resistance it cannot overcome, the current spikes, causing the copper windings to heat up and melt the surrounding insulation. Alternatively, shifting the gear selector switch while the trigger is still depressed can shear the teeth off the gear assembly, leading to immediate mechanical failure and the characteristic grinding noise.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to isolate the problem and attempt a safe reset of the tool. Do not attempt to force the drill if you feel significant resistance.
- Immediately release the trigger and remove the 8V battery pack from the base of the handle to cut all power to the motor.
- Inspect the chuck for any debris or jammed drill bits. Manually rotate the chuck clockwise and counter-clockwise by hand to see if the grinding noise persists without power.
- Locate the gear selector switch on the top of the drill housing. Ensure it is fully seated in either Position 1 (Low Speed/High Torque) or Position 2 (High Speed/Low Torque). If the switch feels "mushy" or is stuck between positions, toggle it firmly back and forth several times while the battery is removed.
- Insert the battery and set the tool to Speed 1 (350 RPM). Gently pull the trigger for a fraction of a second to see if the motor engages smoothly.
- If the tool operates without noise in Speed 1 but grinds in Speed 2, the high-speed gear set is stripped. Limit the tool to Speed 1 for light-duty tasks only until the unit can be replaced.
If That Didn't Work
If the grinding and burning persist regardless of the gear setting, the damage is internal and requires more aggressive troubleshooting.
- Check for Motor Brush Arcing: Look through the ventilation slots of the plastic housing while pulsing the trigger. If you see bright blue or white sparks accompanied by a pungent ozone smell, the motor brushes are worn or the commutator is damaged. This is a terminal failure for the 8V motor and requires a full motor replacement.
- Inspect the Chuck Alignment: A bent drill bit or a misaligned chuck can create a vibration that sounds like grinding. Remove the bit and run the drill empty. If the noise disappears, the issue was with your accessory, not the tool's internal gears.
- Verify Battery Voltage Stability: A failing 8V lithium-ion cell can cause the motor to "stutter," which can sound like mechanical grinding. Try a second, fully charged battery pack to rule out a voltage drop causing the motor to struggle.
- Inspect for Internal Obstructions: If you dropped the tool recently, a piece of the plastic internal casing may have snapped off and lodged itself in the gear train. If you are comfortable, remove the outer housing screws to check for loose plastic shards, but be aware this may void your warranty.

- Gear Shifting Rule: Never move the speed selector switch while the motor is spinning. Always come to a complete stop before switching between Speed 1 and Speed 2 to avoid shearing the gear teeth.
- Load Management: Use Speed 1 (350 RPM) for all screw-driving tasks. Using Speed 2 (1350 RPM) for screws increases the risk of stripping the internal gears and overheating the motor.
- Cool-Down Periods: If you smell a faint burning scent during heavy use, stop immediately and let the tool cool for 10 minutes. The 8V series is designed for light DIY work and does not have the thermal mass for continuous industrial use.
- Battery Storage: Store your 8V batteries in a cool, dry place. Extreme heat can degrade the cells, leading to inconsistent power delivery that puts unnecessary strain on the motor windings.
