Diagnosis
Dirt leaking from the bottom of the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo (Model 24613) while carrying it is typically caused by a failure in the airtight seal between the dirt tank and the vacuum's motor housing. Even when the latch feels "clicked" into place, a microscopic gap can exist if debris—such as a small pebble, pet hair clump, or dried mud—is lodged in the rim of the tank or the corresponding groove on the vacuum body. Because this model uses a high-velocity cyclonic system, fine dust settles in the crevices of the seal; when you tilt the vacuum to carry it, gravity pulls this accumulated debris through the gap. Another common root cause is the deformation of the rubber gasket. Over time, the compression seal on the rim of the dirt tank can flatten or warp, or a small piece of debris can puncture the rubber. If the gasket isn't making 100% contact with the housing, the vacuum will lose suction during use and leak debris when moved. To confirm this, empty the bin and run your finger along the entire circumference of the rubber seal to feel for nicks, tears, or trapped grit. If the seal looks intact, the issue is likely a misalignment of the latching mechanism that prevents the tank from sitting flush against the intake port.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to ensure a vacuum-tight seal and stop the leakage:
- Unplug the vacuum from the wall outlet and move it to a hard surface to avoid introducing more debris during the cleaning process.
- Press the release button firmly to remove the dirt tank. Do not shake the vacuum before removing the tank, as this can push more dirt into the seal area.
- Using a dry microfiber cloth or a can of compressed air, thoroughly clean the rim of the dirt tank. Pay special attention to the area directly behind the latching mechanism where dust often accumulates in a crescent shape.
- Inspect the vacuum body's intake port (the hole where the tank slides in). Use a vacuum hose or a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to remove any grit or hair trapped in the recessed groove that holds the rubber gasket.
- Inspect the rubber gasket on the tank for any twists or protrusions. If the rubber is pinched, gently pull it back into its seated position.
- Reinsert the tank. Instead of just clicking the latch, apply firm downward pressure with both hands on the top of the tank while simultaneously pushing the latch closed. This ensures the gasket is fully compressed before the lock engages.
- Perform a "shake test" by gently tilting the vacuum side-to-side to ensure no debris escapes from the seam.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Filter Seating: If the foam or pleated filter inside the tank is not seated perfectly flush, it can create a pressure imbalance that forces air (and dust) out through the tank's main seal. Remove the filter, tap out the dust, and press it firmly back into its housing until it clicks or sits completely flat.
- Inspect for Housing Cracks: Examine the clear plastic cyclonic chamber on the vacuum body for hairline fractures. If the plastic has cracked due to a drop, the seal will never be airtight regardless of the latch position. If a crack is found, the motor housing assembly must be replaced.
- Test the Latch Tension: If the plastic latch feels "mushy" or doesn't provide a sharp snap, the internal spring may have weakened. Try pushing the tank in slightly further than usual and holding it there while you engage the lock to see if the leaking stops.
- Verify the Bottom Door Seal: Check the bottom release door of the dirt tank. Sometimes the leak isn't from the top seal, but from the bottom trapdoor that isn't fully snapped shut, allowing dirt to spill out when the vacuum is tilted.

- Avoid overfilling the bin; once the debris reaches the "Max Fill" line, it can enter the seal area and prevent the tank from seating properly, leading to leaks.
- Wash the foam filters every 30 days with warm soapy water and let them air dry for 24 hours. A clogged filter increases internal pressure, which can push debris through the seals.
- Do not use silicone lubricants or oils on the rubber gaskets to "improve" the seal, as this attracts more dust and can cause the tank to slide out of the latch.
- When transporting the vacuum over long distances, always empty the bin first to minimize the amount of debris that can migrate into the housing seals.
