Diagnosis
This issue is caused by dried ink buildup within the microscopic nozzles of the print head, a common problem for the WF-2860 since it is not a high-volume office machine. When the printer sits idle for several days, the ink at the nozzle interface evaporates, creating a "plug" of solidified pigment. This prevents ink from flowing consistently, resulting in horizontal white streaks or entirely missing lines of color in your documents.
To confirm this is a nozzle clog and not a software or driver error, you must perform a Nozzle Check. This prints a grid of fine lines for each color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black). If any lines in the grid are broken or missing, the print head is physically obstructed. If the grid is perfect but the print quality is still poor, the issue likely lies in the paper settings or a misalignment of the print head rather than a clog.
How to Fix It
Before starting, ensure all ink cartridges are at least 20% full. The cleaning process consumes a significant amount of ink to "flush" the nozzles; if a cartridge runs dry during a cleaning cycle, air will enter the print head, which can permanently damage the unit. Use standard 20lb plain white paper for the test prints.
- Press the Home button on the printer's control panel to clear any active menus.
- Use the arrow buttons to navigate to the Maintenance menu and press OK.
- Select Print Head Cleaning from the list of options and press OK.
- The screen will prompt you to verify the nozzle status. Select Print Nozzle Pattern and press Start.
- Examine the printed page. If there are gaps in the lines, select Clean and press Start.
- The printer will now run a cleaning cycle. This takes approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Do not open the scanner lid or the ink cartridge cover, and do not power off the device during this time.
- Once the cycle finishes, print another Nozzle Pattern. If the lines are still broken, repeat the cleaning process one more time.
If That Didn't Work
If two standard cleaning cycles do not resolve the streaks, try these advanced recovery methods:
- Perform a Power Cleaning: This is a more aggressive flush than the standard cleaning. Navigate to Maintenance > Power Cleaning. Warning: This uses a massive amount of ink and should only be done once. If this doesn't work, wait 12 hours before trying again to allow any trapped air bubbles to settle.
- Manual Nozzle Cleaning: If the ink is severely dried, you can use a lint-free cloth dampened with a small amount of distilled water or a specialized print head cleaning solution. Gently dab the bottom of the print head (the area where ink exits) to dissolve the crust. Be careful not to touch the gold electrical contacts.
- Verify Paper Settings: Ensure the printer is not set to "Draft" mode. Go to Settings > Paper and Quality and ensure the quality is set to "Standard" or "High." Draft mode often mimics the appearance of missing lines by reducing ink deposition.
- Check Ink Vent Holes: Remove the cartridges and ensure the yellow tape on the top of the cartridge has been completely removed. If the vent hole is blocked, a vacuum forms inside the cartridge, preventing ink from flowing even if the nozzles are clean.
Heads Up
- Avoid Long Idleness: To prevent future clogs, print at least one page of mixed colors every week. This keeps the ink moving and prevents the nozzles from drying out.
- Use Genuine Ink: Third-party "compatible" inks often have different viscosities and can clog the WF-2860's fine nozzles more quickly than Epson original inks.
- Power Cycle: Always turn the printer off using the power button, not by pulling the plug. This ensures the print head returns to its "home" or "capped" position, which seals the nozzles from air.
- Wait Time: If you run three cleanings in a row and see no improvement, stop. The ink may be too thick; waiting 24 hours allows the ink to soften and the cleaning solution to penetrate the clog.
