Diagnosis
The presence of vertical streaks or lines on copies produced by the Epson WorkForce WF-2860 is almost always caused by "debris artifacts" on the scanner glass. Because the WF-2860 uses a CIS (Contact Image Sensor) that moves across the glass, any single speck of dust, dried ink, or a smudge of finger grease acts as a physical obstruction. As the sensor passes over this debris, it creates a continuous line across the entire length of the scanned page. You can confirm this is a glass issue by performing a "blank page test." Place a clean, white sheet of paper on the glass and make a copy. If the streaks appear in the exact same horizontal or vertical position on every page, the culprit is a localized contaminant on the glass surface. If the streaks are erratic or only appear when using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), the issue is likely located on the small strip of glass (the ADF glass) rather than the main flatbed platen.
How to Fix It
To properly eliminate streaks and restore scan clarity, follow this professional cleaning sequence:
- Power down the WF-2860 and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent any electrical surges or accidental movement of the scanner carriage during cleaning.
- Lift the document cover fully. If the cover feels stiff, lift it slowly to avoid stressing the plastic hinges.
- Prepare a high-quality microfiber cloth. Do not use paper towels, as they can leave microscopic scratches on the glass surface over time.
- Apply two drops of 70% isopropyl alcohol or a streak-free glass cleaner directly to the cloth. Never spray liquid directly onto the glass; the WF-2860 has small gaps around the edges of the platen where liquid can seep into the internal electronics, causing a permanent board failure.
- Wipe the main platen glass in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward. Apply light pressure; pressing too hard can potentially displace the glass alignment.
- Locate the narrow strip of glass to the left of the main platen (the ADF glass). This is the most common source of streaks for multi-page documents. Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to scrub the edges of this strip where grime typically accumulates in the corners.
- Use a dry section of the microfiber cloth to buff the glass until no streaks or residue remain.
- Close the cover and plug the unit back in.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the ADF Rollers. If streaks only appear when using the feeder, the rubber rollers may have picked up ink or adhesive from a previous scan. Clean the rollers using a damp, lint-free cloth with water only, rotating them manually to clean the entire circumference.
- Inspect for "Ghosting" or Scratches. Hold a flashlight at a low angle across the glass. If you see a physical scratch in the glass, no amount of cleaning will fix the streak. In this case, the scanner glass assembly must be replaced.
- Calibrate the Scanner. If the lines are multicolored or "rainbowed" rather than black or white, the sensor may be out of alignment. Perform a hard reset by unplugging the unit for 60 seconds and then restarting it to force a sensor recalibration.
- Clean the Internal Mirrors. If streaks persist despite a clean exterior, dust may have entered the internal optical path. Use a can of compressed air to gently blow out the gaps around the scanner carriage, but do not blow air directly into the sensor lens.
Heads Up
- Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners or acetone, as these can strip the anti-reflective coating from the scanner glass, leading to permanent "clouding" of your copies.
- Always clean the ADF glass strip every 500-1,000 pages; this area collects debris much faster than the main flatbed because every page slides across it.
- Ensure the document cover is completely closed and flush before starting a scan; if the cover is slightly ajar, light leakage will cause "washout" streaks on the edges of your copies.
- Keep the printer in a low-dust environment or use a dust cover when not in use to prevent particulate matter from settling on the platen.
