The F 51 error code on the Speed Queen DF7004WE indicates an "Out of Range" reading from the exhaust thermistor. Specifically, the control board is detecting a resistance value that is either too high (open circuit) or too low (short circuit), or it is seeing a temperature spike that exceeds the safe operating threshold. This is a safety mechanism designed to prevent the gas burner from overheating the drum and causing a fire. While the error points to the thermistor, the root cause is often environmental rather than electronic. If the exhaust air cannot escape the machine efficiently, heat builds up rapidly around the blower housing where the thermistor is located. This causes the sensor to trip the F 51 code even if the part itself is functioning perfectly. You can confirm if it is a restriction by running a short cycle with the exterior vent disconnected; if the error does not appear, your ducting is the problem. If the error appears immediately upon startup without any heat, the thermistor has likely suffered a hard failure or a wiring break.
How to Fix It
If you have confirmed that your venting is clear and the error persists, you must replace the exhaust thermistor located on the blower housing.
- Disconnect the gas supply line and unplug the 120V power cord from the wall outlet to ensure the machine is completely dead.
- Remove the top panel by unscrewing the two screws at the rear of the top deck and sliding the panel backward.
- Locate the blower housing at the bottom of the machine. The exhaust thermistor is a small sensor clipped into the metal housing near the exhaust outlet.
- Inspect the wiring harness leading to the thermistor. Look for frayed wires or signs of rodent damage, which is common in gas dryers.
- Disconnect the wiring harness by pressing the locking tab and pulling the connector straight out.
- Remove the old thermistor from its mounting bracket. It is typically held by a tension clip or a single screw.
- Install the new thermistor (Part No. 334443 or equivalent for the DF7004 series), ensuring it is seated firmly against the metal housing for accurate heat transfer.
- Reconnect the wiring harness until you hear a distinct click.
- Reassemble the top panel and restore power and gas.
- Power cycle the machine by unplugging it for 30 seconds to clear the stored F 51 code from the control board memory.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Main Control Board: If the thermistor is new and the error persists, the issue may be a failed relay or a burnt trace on the main control board. Inspect the board for "scorched" areas or bulging capacitors near the sensor input pins. If the board is faulty, the entire control assembly must be replaced.
- Verify Venting Length and Material: Ensure you are not using flexible plastic or foil "accordion" venting. These collapse and create turbulence that triggers F 51. Replace with 4-inch rigid aluminum ducting. If the total run exceeds 25 feet, ensure you have a booster fan installed, as the DF7004WE blower cannot push air effectively over long distances.
- Check the Blower Wheel for Obstructions: A piece of clothing or a buildup of lint inside the blower wheel can restrict airflow enough to cause a heat spike. Remove the blower housing and manually spin the wheel to ensure it is clear of debris and not slipping on the motor shaft.
- Test Resistance with a Multimeter: Use a digital multimeter to test the thermistor's resistance. Set the meter to Ohms (Ω). A functioning thermistor should show a specific resistance value that changes as you apply heat (using a hairdryer). If it reads "OL" (Open Loop) or 0 Ohms, the sensor is dead regardless of the error code.
