The "Check Filter" alert on the Electrolux ELFE7637AW is frequently a misleading error message. While it suggests a physical blockage in the lint screen, it is more often triggered by a failure in the moisture sensing circuit. The dryer uses two conductive metal strips (the moisture sensors) located inside the drum to measure the electrical conductivity of the laundry. If these strips are coated in a thin film of wax, fabric softener residue, or accumulated lint, the machine cannot detect the moisture level of the clothes. When the control board detects that the sensors are "blinded" or that the airflow is restricted, it triggers a safety lockout to prevent overheating. This results in the persistent beeping and the refusal of the dryer to engage the motor or heating element. You can confirm this is a sensor issue if the dryer will run on a "Timed Dry" setting (which bypasses the sensors) but fails to start or shuts off prematurely on "Auto" or "Steam" cycles.
How to Fix It
To resolve the sensor blindness and clear the error code, follow these precise steps:
- Disconnect the power by unplugging the unit from the 240V outlet or switching off the circuit breaker to prevent accidental startup.
- Remove the lint filter tray from the top of the drum. Use a high-powered vacuum with a narrow crevice tool to suck out all lint from the internal filter housing, reaching as deep as possible into the chute.
- Locate the moisture sensor bars. These are two thin, metallic strips located on the inner wall of the drum, typically positioned near the front edge.
- Saturate a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth with 70% or 91% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
- Firmly scrub the surface of the metal strips. You will likely see a grey or brown residue transfer to the cloth; this is the buildup of dryer sheets and fabric softener that creates an insulating layer.
- Continue scrubbing until the metal appears bright and clean. Ensure no residue remains on the edges where the strips meet the drum wall.
- Allow the alcohol to evaporate completely for 2-3 minutes.
- Reinsert the lint filter and restore power. Select a "Timed Dry" cycle first to ensure the motor engages, then test an "Auto" cycle to verify the "Check Filter" message has vanished.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: If the error is cached in the control board, unplug the dryer for exactly 10 minutes. While unplugged, press and hold the Start/Pause button for 5 seconds to discharge any remaining capacitors in the PCB. Plug the unit back in and attempt to start.
- Inspect the External Vent: A partial blockage in the exterior wall vent can create backpressure that triggers the airflow sensor. Disconnect the flexible silver duct from the back of the dryer and run a cycle. If the error disappears, the blockage is in your home's wall piping, not the machine.
