Diagnosis
The loud thumping or banging noise specifically during the Steam Refresh cycle is caused by a phenomenon known as "water hammer" occurring within the water inlet valve assembly. Unlike a standard wash cycle, the steam function on the ELFE7637AW utilizes rapid, short bursts of water to feed the steam generator. When the solenoid valve closes abruptly, it creates a pressure shockwave that echoes through the plumbing and the valve housing, resulting in a rhythmic metallic banging sound. This is typically caused by a failing solenoid spring or a buildup of mineral deposits (scale) inside the valve orifice, which prevents the plunger from seating smoothly. You can confirm this is the issue if the noise is absent during normal drying cycles and only occurs when the steam generator is actively heating and drawing water. If you place your hand on the rear upper panel of the dryer during the noise, you will feel a physical vibration coinciding with each thumping sound.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must replace the water inlet valve assembly (Part #5304520501). This ensures the solenoid closes with the correct tension and the seals are airtight.
- Disconnect the dryer from the 240V power supply and shut off the hot and cold water supply valves located behind the unit.
- Using a 1/4" nut driver, remove the screws securing the top panel to the chassis. Carefully lift the top panel and set it aside to expose the internal components.
- Locate the water inlet valve assembly at the rear top left of the machine. Use a bucket to catch any residual water remaining in the lines.
- Disconnect the water supply hoses using a wrench. Be careful not to over-tighten when removing the hoses to avoid stripping the threads.
- Unplug the wiring harness from the solenoid terminals. Note the position of the wires to ensure they are reconnected to the correct ports.
- Remove the mounting screws holding the valve assembly to the frame.
- Install the new valve assembly (#5304520501), securing the mounting screws first, then reconnecting the wiring harness.
- Attach the water supply hoses, ensuring the rubber washers are seated correctly to prevent leaks.
- Restore water and power, then run a Steam Refresh cycle to verify the noise has ceased.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Water Supply Lines: If the banging persists, the issue may be external to the dryer. Ensure your supply hoses are not kinked or touching the back of the dryer wall. If you have rigid copper piping leading to the dryer, the "hammer" may be occurring in the house pipes; installing a water hammer arrestor on the supply line will dampen these pressure shocks.
- Check the Steam Generator Housing: Inspect the steam generator tank for loose mounting brackets. If the tank has shifted or a rubber grommet has perished, the vibration from the water valve can cause the tank to rattle against the dryer cabinet, amplifying the noise.
- Verify Water Pressure: Low home water pressure can cause the solenoid to "chatter" rather than snap shut, creating a repetitive clicking or thumping sound. Ensure your home water pressure is between 20 and 120 psi.
- Clear Mineral Blockages: If you live in a hard-water area, the internal steam lines may be partially clogged. Flush the system by disconnecting the hose and running water through the valve briefly to clear any sediment that might be causing the valve to struggle.

- Always use braided stainless steel hoses rather than rubber hoses to prevent bursts caused by the pressure spikes associated with steam cycles.
- Periodically check the water supply connections for "weeping" leaks, as the vibration from the steam cycle can gradually loosen the hose nuts over time.
- Avoid using distilled water in the steam line unless specifically required; some valve seals require the mineral content of tap water to maintain a proper seal.
- Ensure the dryer is perfectly level; an imbalanced machine can amplify internal mechanical vibrations, making a minor valve click sound like a loud thumping.
