Diagnosis
The burning plastic or acrid "hot dust" smell in the Samsung DVG45B6300W is almost always caused by "stray lint" accumulation within the internal cabinet. While the lint screen catches most debris, fine particles bypass the filter and settle on the gas burner assembly or the heat exchanger. Because this is a gas model, the burner creates intense localized heat; when lint settles directly on the burner tube or the ignition area, it doesn't just blow away—it singes, creating a chemical, burning smell that is pushed back into the drum and into your clothes. In some cases, this is exacerbated by a partial blockage in the external vent line. When the airflow is restricted, the internal temperature of the cabinet rises beyond normal operating parameters, causing settled dust on electrical wire harnesses or plastic components near the rear exhaust to overheat. You can confirm this by checking if the smell is more intense during the first 10 minutes of a "Steam" cycle, as the increased humidity can trap odors and make them more pungent before the airflow fully clears the chamber.
How to Fix It
To eliminate the source of the smell, you must perform a deep internal cabinet cleaning. This goes beyond the lint screen and requires accessing the chassis.
- Disconnect the dryer from the 120V power outlet and shut off the gas supply valve to ensure total safety.
- Pull the unit away from the wall and remove the screws securing the rear access panel.
- Using a high-powered shop vacuum with a narrow crevice tool, vacuum the entire floor of the cabinet. Focus specifically on the area surrounding the gas burner tube and the ignition assembly.
- Carefully vacuum the blower wheel housing. Lint often clumps here, restricting airflow and causing the unit to run hotter than designed.
- Open the front door and remove the lint filter. Use a flexible duster or a vacuum extension to reach deep into the internal lint duct (the bulkhead) that leads from the filter housing down to the blower.
- Check the rear exhaust port for any crushed sections of foil venting that might be trapping hot air inside the machine.
- Reassemble the panel and run a "Air Dry" or "Timed Dry" cycle for 20 minutes with an empty drum to burn off any remaining microscopic residue before loading clothes.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the rear exterior vent line for "clogging points." If the vent is more than 10 feet long or has multiple 90-degree elbows, the back-pressure forces hot air into the cabinet instead of out the wall. Replace flexible foil venting with rigid metal ducting to increase CFM (cubic feet per minute) airflow.
- Check for "foreign object" combustion. Inspect the drum seal and the interior of the blower wheel for melted plastic items, such as a stray laundry bag, a plastic garment tag, or a small toy that may have slipped through the drum perforations and landed on the burner.
- Verify the Gas Valve operation. If the smell is accompanied by a faint sulfur scent, the burner may not be igniting cleanly, causing "incomplete combustion" which smells like burning chemicals. This requires a technician to check the gas pressure and the igniter's voltage.
- Examine the Steam Generator assembly. If you are using a steam cycle, check the water connection for leaks. Water dripping onto the hot burner tube can create a steaming, scorched-dust smell that mimics burning plastic.

- Never use compressed air to blow out the cabinet; this simply pushes lint deeper into the motor and electrical switches, which can cause a short circuit or a fire hazard.
- Clean your external dryer vent cap outside every 6 months. A clogged exterior screen is the primary cause of internal cabinet overheating in Samsung gas dryers.
- Avoid using "over-drying" settings on synthetic fabrics. High heat can actually melt the polyester fibers of your clothes, creating a permanent burning smell inside the drum.
- Ensure the dryer is leveled perfectly. An unlevel drum can cause clothes to rub against the seal, creating friction heat and a rubbery burning odor.
