Diagnosis
A loud scraping or grinding noise that synchronizes with the rotation of the drum typically indicates a mechanical failure in the drum support system. In the Speed Queen DF7004WE, the most common culprit is a seized or worn drum support roller. These rollers contain internal bearings that, over time, flatten or wear down, causing the metal hub to grind against the roller frame or the drum shell itself. Alternatively, the noise may be caused by a foreign object (like a coin or screw) trapped between the drum and the rear bulkhead, or a failing idler pulley bearing.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must inspect the drum's rotation points:
- Safety First: Disconnect the dryer from the power source and shut off the gas supply.
- Access the Drum: Remove the top panel and front bulkhead to gain access to the interior cabinet.
- Inspect Rollers: Remove the drive belt and manually rotate the drum. Listen closely to the two rear support rollers. If you see "flat spots" on the rubber or hear a grinding sound from the axle, the rollers are shot.
- Replacement: Remove and replace both rear support rollers (Part #310026). It is highly recommended to replace the rear felt seal (Part #310378) simultaneously, as a worn seal allows lint to enter the bearings, causing them to fail.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the belt and panels, ensuring the belt is properly tensioned.
If That Didn't Work
If the rollers are smooth and silent, check the idler pulley (Part #310367). A failing idler pulley often produces a higher-pitched rhythmic screech or grind. If the noise persists, inspect the drum glide rings or the rear bearing for wear; if the drum has "dropped" slightly, it may be scraping against the internal cabinet walls.
Heads Up
Never apply oil, WD-40, or grease to the drum rollers. Lubricants attract lint and dust, which creates an abrasive paste that will destroy your new bearings and seals in a matter of weeks. Replace the parts—do not lubricate them.
